SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF BROKEN HOMES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF CHILDREN
ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to determine the impact of broken homes on a child’s academic performance. Some social and academic maladjustments that are likely to have an impact on a child’s school performance were identified, along with three hypotheses to test and prove them.
Questionnaires were used to collect data, and they consisted of twenty (20) questions divided into four sections. A total of 50 parents were chosen from the Iguelahia community area of Edo state to serve as the study’s representative and sample. Simple percentages were used as statistics in the data analysis.
Children from broken homes outperform children from stable and happy homes, according to research. Furthermore, the findings demonstrated that children from monogamous homes outperform their polygamous counterparts in school. The study provided solutions to the identified problems.

CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
Man lives in a society where education is an important process in the transmission of knowledge, skills, ideas, and values so that they can be useful to themselves and society. It is widely acknowledged that a child’s upbringing has a significant impact on his or her life.
According to an African proverb, “a child who is cared for, loved, and aware that his parents are interested in him and his academic performance will strive to work hard so as to please his parent.” Based on the aforementioned, time after school would be wisely spent in diligent study and doing some assignments and home work rather than loitering or playing with friends.
According to the study, many factors influence a child’s academic performance in school, including the cultural and economic environment in which the child is raised. Sex (gender), ethnicity, and religious background are some examples.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The value of education cannot be overstated. The issues in this study are that education has a huge impact on one’s life. As a result, a child’s primary source of education is at home. Every child comes from a unique family. The research looks into how a student’s upbringing affects his or her academic performance.
STUDY OBJECTIVES
The goal of this study is to look into the home environment and students’ academic performance, using comparative studies to see if children from broken homes perform well academically.
HYPOTHESIS
The following hypothesis will be put to the test.
1. In today’s society, a broken marriage is an everyday occurrence.
2. There is a link between a child’s relationship with his or her parents and a student’s academic performance.
3. The majority of children are raised by single parents rather than both parents.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
Education is critical for both the individual and the nation. As a result, a child’s home environment influences his or her progress in a learning situation.
