ABSTRACT

This study examined how internet news media covered Nigeria’s presidential election in 2015. The goal is to determine the level of attention each party received, the portrayal of the parties, and the direction of reporting. Three internet media outlets, Sahara Reporters, Scan News, and Premium Times, were purposefully picked.

The survey was conducted from January 1st to March 27th, 2015. A total of three hundred and twenty-three (323) items (news and feature pieces) about the 2015 presidential election were generated using Google search and the websites of the three media. The sample size was chosen at random from a total of 169 items.

The data were analysed using frequencies and simple percentages. The findings found that the PDP and APC garnered the greatest media attention, with the PDP receiving the most stories. Aside from the two parties, all of the other parties appeared to be invincible in media reports from the time period analysed.

It was also revealed that the media was more concerned with dispute resolution than concerns such as voter education. Among other recommendations,

the researcher urged government communication regulatory bodies to organise a special workshop for online journalists on ethics and responsible practice, while legal and technological strategies should be developed to limit the excesses of online journalists.
