ABSTRACT
It is well known that cleanliness is second only to godliness, and health equals wealth. Good health is attained through environmental management.
The importance of environmental management cannot be overstated, as there is ongoing environmental degradation as a result of rising urbanisation.
Pollution is a key challenge of urbanisation, with the majority of the reasons recognised as industrial combustion, solid waste generation, oil spillage disposal, and so on. Because these causes are unavoidable,
there is a need for effective control of them. This project will take a critical look at the solid waste management issue in Enugu, with a special focus on Ogbete’s primary market.
The project, which is necessary for ND programme completion, will be divided into five chapters.
The statement of the problem in chapter one, which is the introduction section of the project, is supposed to be those linked with solid waste management concerns, which may include health hazards, contaminated environment, drainage system blockage, and so on. All of these issues will be thoroughly covered in the main study.
The goal of this project, which will be included in the main project, will be to identify the significance of such management as well as all the various solutions for reducing excessive solid waste generation and management in the market in particular and Enugu city in general.
The study’s backdrop and need will centre on historical solid waste management experiences and challenges in order to know how to better future situations. All of this information allows one to construct hypotheses, which can be either good or negative at the end of the investigation.
The project’s second chapter is designed to study certain literatures on the topic area, which can take the shape of books, papers, journals, and so on. There will be a thorough study of several connected issues such as solid waste management,
solid waste management policies, solid waste generation, classification, and importance of solid waste management. These are likely to come from libraries and other sources.
The third chapter will focus on research technique and design. The data sources, both primary and secondary, will be highlighted here.
Primary sources include questionnaires and direct interviews, whereas secondary sources include information from libraries, books, journals, and magazines, among other things. To exhibit this data in a certain way, statistical models such as a bar chart, pie chart, and histogram will be employed.
The fourth chapter is about data display and analysis. The obtained field data is analysed and presented in a format to get an analytical conclusion. To reach scientific conclusions, statistical analysis approaches will be applied.
Chapter five discusses the research findings, recommendations for addressing solid waste management issues in the study area, and conclusions.
CHAPITRE ONE
INTRODUCTION
According to empirical research, Nigeria is one of the countries in the world that produces high-quality solid waste. This phenomena is projected to occur due to her rapidly rising population, as well as her urban population’s sophistication in taste and need for home and industrial items.
Uncontrolled trash generation and disposal have harmed our otherwise pleasant urban environment. Almost all cities in Nigeria are characterised by solid waste assistance or accumulation. The health consequences of this development on our urban streams, health, and socioeconomic development are concerning.
When solid waste pollution has a significant impact on a society’s socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental surroundings, it is nearly impossible to achieve good health, hygiene, and sustainable development.
Policymakers, thought leaders, and political office holders are confronted on a daily basis with the endemic dilemma of what to deal with rising heaps of solid trash in our urban environment.
Many desirable houses have deteriorated dramatically due to their closeness to dump sites, having a considerable detrimental impact on both rental and capital prices.
The current scenario represents a hopeless state, with almost all government agencies responsible with waste management, particularly ENSEPA, at a loss for what to do.
1.1 STSATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
As we all know, solid waste management is a difficult chore. It causes a slew of issues for individuals, including drainage blockage (flooding), traffic jams, health hazards, and an ugly environment.
Furthermore, environmental pollution in metropolitan areas caused by solid wastes is a major worry for the international community, because pollution of any kind interferes with our good chain, health, comfort, amenities, property values, and living standards.
Today, all businesses are impacted by environmental changes as well as government efforts to manage these changes.
1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The primary goal of this research is to learn about the solid waste problem in Nigerian citizens, namely in the Ogbete main market in Enugu. Furthermore, the research seeks to determine what should be done to lessen the health risks and the growing threat of solid waste in our markets and communities.
1.3 BACKGROUND AND NEED OF THE STUDY
Urbanisation, or the gathering of people in cities, has seen a phenomenal increase in recent years. Most cities in Nigeria have now reached full-fledged urban status. The consequences of urbanisation are manifested in the areas of unemployment,
insufficient social amenities due to undue pressures on the available ones by a growing population, an increase in crime wave, sophistication and changes in demand and taste, and high consumption on industrial and domestic goods, resulting in large volumes of solid waste.
The existence of solid wastes in our metropolitan environment, in the absence of appropriate waste collection and disposal gear, has left the majority of these cities solidified, with serious consequences for urban health. It leaves a lot to be desired, hence the need for this research.
1.4 THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF THE STUDY
This research is based on W. Wilkie and Jodan’s Topical hygiene and sanitation theory, which states that “the collection and disposal of refuse and waste matter is any integral part of any effective sanitation exercise.”
According to the aforesaid viewpoint and theory, any effective waste management package for suitable resolution of our solid waste hydra-headed difficulties benefits the entire individual main market.
1.5 THEORY OF RESEARCH QUESTION
To guide the investigation, the following research questions were developed. These are some examples:
1. What is your solid waste disposal strategy?
2. Do you have any garbage cans at your establishments?
3. How frequently is garbage discharged from your day?
4. Do you arrange your trash before disposing of it?
5. Is there enough equipment and staff available?
6. Is the storage, gathering and transportation of wastes from individual shops in Ogbete main market?
7. How far away are waste dumps from specific stores?
1.6 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
As a result, the research is limited to solid waste management in Ogbete’s major market. The scope of study is divided into two parts:

b. Constraints
1.7 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
1. The primary relevance of this study is that it will contribute significantly to the study area’s efficient and effective waste management system.
2. It will also contribute to the improvement of the environmental state of Ogbete’s main market.
3. The outcomes of this study will also serve as the foundation for future research in this field.
Finally, it will aid in the prevention, mitigation, and control of sickness related with solid waste and food poisoning.
1.8 INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY
This research is divided into five (5) chapters for effective coverage, as follows:
The first chapter discusses the issue statement, the aim of the study, the background and necessity for the investigation, the theoretical foundation of the study, the research question, the scope of the study, the significance of the study, and a summary of the study.
The second chapter is a review of the literature. This chapter discusses the perspectives of environmental and solid waste management authorities on pertinent literature.
The third chapter is the research design and methodology, which describes the step-by-step technique used to carry out the study.
The fifth chapter contains the study’s findings, recommendations, and conclusion.
