CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Statistics is used in almost every aspect of human existence, particularly in statistical analysis and inference. Formally dealing only with state affairs, which accounts for the name statistics.

Statistics‘ effect has now moved to manufacturing businesses, agricultural sectors, banks, business communication, economics, education, political science, psychology, sociology, and many other areas of life.

It is thus a set of scientific methods and theories for collecting, organising, presenting, and analysing data, as well as generating correct conclusions and making sound decisions. The application can be found in any discipline that uses numerical data.

Furthermore, this initiative aims to explain and analyse the fertility and death rates of people in “Osogbo Local Government”. This project spans four fiscal years, from 2006 to 2009, and data is being gathered at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital OSOGBO.

Also, a computation would be made based on the total number of fertility and mortality rates, and this would be used to obtain the information needed to actualise facts.

1.2 Historical Background

LAUTECH Teaching Hospital is owned by both the Osun and Oyo state governments. The hospital is located in the Idi-seke region of Osogbo Local Government. LAUTECH Teaching Hospital is equipped to a level that no other hospital in the state can compete with.

LAUTECH Teaching Hospital employs a large number of professional doctors, as well as highly qualified and efficient nurses.

1.3 Aims and Objectives of the Study

i. Determine whether the number of live births (fertility) in Osogbo Local Government exceeds the number of deaths (mortality).

ii. To be able to evaluate future changes in fertility and mortality rates using the least squares method.

iii. To calculate the trend value of fertility and mortality rates using the moving average method.

1.4 Types of Statistics

There are two sorts of statistics: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. In descriptive statistics, the research includes information on each member of the population as well as descriptions of the population’s characteristics such as total, average, means, and more.

However, in Inferential Statistics, the researcher only has knowledge on a portion of the population (sample). The sample’s mean, mode, and standard deviation are all collected and referred to as statistics.

1.5 Uses of Statistics

Statistics is useful in all areas of human activity. We can use statistical knowledge to determine the number of employed individuals in a country, to identify market trends, and to make any request in any company enterprise. Indeed, statistics apply to every facet of our daily lives.

1.5.1 Types of Statistical Data

Data can be described as pieces of information gathered for a certain purpose. The type of data to be collected in any survey is determined by the issue under research and the questions to be asked.

1.5.2 Primary Data

Primary data is defined as data acquired or pulled from the original source for a specific purpose and intended to be useful. These forms of data are always accurate and reliable. They can be acquired using the following methods:

Mail a questionnaire.

Telephone interview.

Personal interview.

Direct observation.

Experiment

1.5.3 Secondary Data

This is data collected for a different purpose than the one for which it was originally intended. It is secondary data gathered for a specific reason from statistical enquiries that they employed. It has the advantage of decreasing both the time and cost of use.

1.6 Possible Limitations on Data Use

The data obtained is secondary data, and it is subject to several challenges, which limit its usefulness when dealing with secondary data. As a result, any suggestions or recommendations based on the study are not limited to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.
