STRUCTURE OF NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS

ABSTRACT

This research project defines and analyses the structure of Nigerian government and politics between 1999 and 2007 in order to increase understanding of how government and politics function in Nigeria.

According to the research, the Nigerian Political System is a federal republic with a presidential system, and the constitution provides for a separation of powers among the three bodies of government.

The first chapter discusses the study’s background, problem statement, objective, significance of the study, hypothesis, and scope of the investigation, research question, and definition of words.

The second chapter covers the examination of literature and provides a full description of the term Nigerian Government and Politics.

The third chapter focused on research methodology, research design, study population, sample size, data gathering method, data collection instrument, and data analysis procedures.

The fourth chapter emphasises data presentation and analysis, whereas the fifth chapter emphasises the summary of findings, conclusion, and recommendations.

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nigeria is a Federal Republic modelled after the United States, with the president exercising executive power and influences from the Westminster System model in the makeup and operation of the bicameral legislature’s upper and lower houses. The President of Nigeria, on the other hand, is both the head of state and the head of government in a multi-party system.

Nigerian politics take place within the context of a federal, presidential, representative democratic republic, with the government exercising Executive power. Legislative power is shared between the government and the two legislative chambers,

the House of Representatives and the Senate. The National Assembly, Nigeria’s legislative body, is made up of the two houses. The Supreme Court of Nigeria is the highest judicial branch of government in Nigeria. The National Assembly checks the executive branch of government.

1.2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

One of the primary issues identified by the researcher in this research effort is Nigeria’s stance towards constitutional revision.

The United States Constitution, for example, has only been modified twice in 230 years. The situation described above is entirely different from what is occurring in Nigeria.

Before 1999, the Nigerian constitution has been changed four times. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration attempted to modify the 1999 Constitution again in 2006. All of our leaders’ constitutional amendments in Nigeria are designed to benefit their own selfish interests.

However, the success of any constitution is dependent on how much it is respected by those whose responsibility it is to uphold it.

Another issue with Nigerian politics is that individuals in charge of the country’s political affairs do not appear to be politically oriented. And, according to Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1956), “Men Sana Incorpo Sano” (those of sound mind and memory) should be entrusted with public matters.

While the majority of them did not pursue higher education in political science, public administration, or other government and political courses. Because they are not professional politicians, they do not make professional decisions.

A good example is the abrupt removal of oil subsidies, which resulted in a disastrous situation for the entire country. Political decisions should be made with caution and planning.

1.3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The following is the study’s primary goal:

To evaluate the function and impact of Nigerian government and politics, as well as how they have contributed to the growth of both at the federal, state, and local government levels.

1.4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study’s researcher comments can help to enrich the literature on Nigerian government and politics, as well as improve people’s and students’ understanding of the subject.

This study will be valuable to most countries that want to understand the nature of government and politics in their country, as well as in municipal and state governments.

The findings and recommendations of this study can be used by the president of this country to improve the country’s attributes.

1.5 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study work is constrained by the following factors:

Time factor: The time allotted is insufficient for me to complete the project task accurately.

Finance: This also limits my ability to do my research work as intended.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This project work is intended to cover every area of Nigerian government and politics, as well as its activities and duties. And how government and politics have affected the country, organisation, institution, and so on.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Democracy can be defined in a variety of ways, but Abram Lincoln of America provided the most recognised term. He described democracy as government of, by, and for the people; a type of government that governs in the interests of the majority.
