INTRODUCTION
Background for the Study
Communication is an essential tool for human survival; without effective information services, no society, organisation, club, or institution can function successfully because they all rely on communication to exist.
To cope with the rapid changes in the globe, communication has continued to transform society. This has resulted in a continuous interchange of knowledge and ideas, improving our ability to receive and process information about our environment.
Today, advances in science and information technology have resulted in more complicated modes of communication in which information and events are simultaneously distributed to a dispersed and diverse audience via the electromagnetic spectrum or airwaves.
This development has reduced independent functioning societies to a mass unit known as a global village. As a result, the phrase “mass media” has become widely used. However, mass media refers to the organs of mass communication, which are typically divided into print and electronic media.
The electronic media include filmmaking, radio, and television. Tucker (2000) defines television, which is the topic of this study. As the skill of instantly producing a translent visual image of an actual or recorded scene from a distance via an electrical system or telecommunication.
Because of its ability to integrate voice, visual, and motion, this medium has a greater influence on societal change than radio and print media. Because of these appeals, television programme planning and packaging have evolved into a process of meticulous manipulation and segmentation of broadcast time to meet and cater to the different tastes and conveniences of its audience.
Among these numerous programmes are those aimed to meet the social needs of the youth. However, certain youth shows may fail to meet their desired aims due to a mix of challenges encountered by Nigerian television broadcasters.
These issues include a lack of funds, insufficient technical production facilities, and a shortage of competent workers. kids programming should strive to instill in kids the social, cultural, and moral qualities that will allow them to function as effective members of society.
According to MacBride et al. (2001). Television has such a profound socialising influence that it can teach its viewers how to think and act. It has the ability to reflect, mould opinion, and contribute to the formation of attitudes.
This prompted the decision to investigate youth Rendezvous co-operation (AKBC) channel 45 in order to determine the extent to which they have contributed to shaping the characteristics of adolescents in Uyo metropolitan to conform to societally acceptable behaviour.
According to Mboho (2002:102), television in Nigeria is supposed to broadcast shows that would help raise awareness, particularly among youngsters, and foster expression and mastery of skills.
This viewpoint must be based on an appreciation of the value of young in any given community and the necessity to direct their affairs in a way that benefits society.
This is because, as John Denvey correctly points out in Volume 33 of Journalism Educator. Society determines its own future by controlling young people’s activities. Because the youth of a specific time will eventually make up the society of that period.
This means that youth programming must be capable of developing young people into responsible and patriotic leaders capable of steering their societies’ affairs in the proper direction.
Statement of the Problem
Television, as a socialising medium of mass communication, cannot by itself cause people to think and behave in accordance with societal norms unless intervening elements such as selective exposure and communicator crebility are included.
As a result, in order for television to play a part in forming the characters of adolescents and other values in society, television operators must understand the makeup of the societies in which they operate, as well as the special needs of youths within such societies.
This will assist them in determining how to meet those needs through careful design and packaging of youth programmes. These programmes should not be designed or packaged in a hurry or produced as a routine everyday practice
but should involve deep-rooted research and analysis of the sociological and psychological demands of youths, what society expects of them, and how society goes about meeting their needs.
In planning and packaging these youth programmes, producers are required to adhere to what is legally allowed as enshrined in the constitution, as well as other socio-cultural and ethnical behavioural norms that individuals have inside their culture.
However, as much as youth programmes attempt to instill moral and ethnic values in youngsters, they must also be entertaining in order to maintain youths’ interest;
however, youth activities are frequently purely entertainment-oriented. Sometimes they are simply instructive tools. One of them worries if providing amusement and information is enough to help shape the character of young people.
