CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The idea of an electronic office has captured many people’s imaginations, and the media has given it extensive publicity in the corporate and government sectors.
Technological advancements have had a profound impact on office labour, beginning with the concept of an automated office during the industrial revolution and continuing with the rise of the paperless office, both of which are posing serious challenges to long-established norms in the workplace.
We are living in a computerised or technological era, and there have been many changes in the equipment used in modern offices. Some people believe that these machines, such as telex machines and electronic typewriters, pose a threat to the secretarial profession and could eventually replace secretaries entirely in corporations and government agencies.
With this claim, we want to learn how secretaries really feel about and react to using these modern office machines. If secretaries are negative about it, then it’s clear that office work won’t be done perfectly and efficiently, and the companies or government parastatals will suffer because the secretaries can’t handle the machines.
On the other hand, if secretaries are positive, then the companies or parastatals will benefit. The secretaries will benefit greatly from these sophisticated technologies, and it will be clear that these devices are just robots that need human operation to accomplish their tasks.
