Introduction

INTRODUCTION

The concept of co-operatives encompasses a wide range of subjects and areas. It is globally distributed. In various nations, including capitalist, socialist, and mixed economy countries, we have observed this phenomenon. They are mostly located in poor countries or those classified as third world.

The term “co-operative” that is used as an adjectival noun is derived from the verb “to co-operate” or the noun “cooperation”. Cooperation is a broad phrase that refers to the act of two or more individuals coming together, whether formally or informally, to work towards a common goal, regardless of whether it is legal or unlawful, or socially accepted or not.

The activity may be motivated by self-interest, the common good, or the interests of the actors, without causing harm to others. It is also used in a more specific sense to refer to the activities carried out by cooperatives and other self-help organisations.

G.J. Holyoake, a prominent British co-operative pioneer, propagandist, and author, succinctly expresses the dual meaning and essential features of a co-operative.

According to Holyoake, a co-operative is an organised form of self-help through honest labour and fair trade, where profits are distributed equitably among the individuals who contributed to them, whether through physical or intellectual efforts. Industrial co-operatives refer to the concept that we currently comprehend.

The term “co-operation” refers to the collaborative efforts of two or more individuals or entities to achieve a desired outcome. This can be observed when a person uses a lever to move a heavy object, or when a cat’s paw is used to retrieve a chestnut from a fire.

Another example is when a physician marries the daughter of an undertaker with the intention of forming a union.
