STUDY OF THE ROLE AND PERFORMANCE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROFESSIONAL SECRETARIES.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In today’s society, it is well understood that occupations have distinguishing characteristics that set them apart from other professions based on their efficiency.

The layperson’s perception of a profession is based on the nature of the work performed by its members and its significance to society. This is why most people assume that medicine and law were the only professions that existed prior to the industrial revolution.

In recent years, the secretarial profession was not considered as medical or law, despite the importance of its services to the survival and prosperity of any organisation.

Secretarial work necessitates skill, training, education, and moral behaviour. The position of secretaries was not something to brag about at the time;

a study conducted by Carr-Saunders (1964) confirmed the deteriorating social position of secretaries at that time, when the question of whether secretaries deserve more honour to be consulted when decisions affecting the conditions of their services are made arose. People saw secretaries as more of a servant.”

Secretarial vocation was the product of commercial school; during that time, individuals who attended commercial schools were considered secretaries, but in reality, they were typists.

However, as the industrial revolution began, the curriculum for secretarial training altered to incorporate new techniques and equipment. Carr- Saunders (1964) also remarked that the rise of the secretarial profession occurred almost in our lifetime and may be linked back to major changes in the educational system.

The secretarial profession in Nigeria is now recognised as one of the professions that exist as a result of its enormous contributions to the commercial, social, and political growth of any nation. It is widely regarded as an instrument for achieving national growth, especially now that there is an urgent need for it.
