ABSTRACT

This study focused on men’s knowledge and acceptance of vasectomy as a method of contraception among male personnel at a central hospital. Agbor150 questionnaires were distributed, and 120 were successfully collected and processed.

Closed-ended structured questionnaires were utilised to get information from the researcher regarding men’s awareness and acceptability of vasectomy as a method of contraception. The examined data were combined into frequency tables with percentages, which were then clarified.

70 (58.33%) said they had heard of vasectomy, 50 (41.67%) had never heard of it, 15 (12.5%) said they had considered vasectomy as a method of contraception, 105 (87.5%) said their religious beliefs did not support it, and 15 (12.50%) saw nothing wrong with vasectomy.

The hypothetical claims were tested using chi-square and a level of significance of 0.05, yielding a theoretical value of 55.07, which was more than the computed value, resulting in the null hypothesis being accepted.

The analysed data were compared to empirical studies for similarities and differences, and the reasons for dissimilarities were explored. It was recommended that the hospital administration should organise a seminar and workshop on vasectomy to enhance men’s knowledge on the acceptance of vasectomy as a method of contraception. Additionally, the government should create more awareness on vasectomy via mass media (radio, television, newspapers).
