Chapter 1

1.1 STUDY BACKGROUND

Modern cooperatives emerged as a response to the economic exploitation of ordinary individuals during the intense period of the industrial revolution, aiming to offer them economic relief.

Okonkwo (1989) firmly advocates for the thesis that the co-operative movement emerged out of necessity, as a response to the negative effects of the industrial revolution. He argues that it was a strategy adopted by the struggling working classes to improve their own circumstances.

In Nigeria, the name “co-operatives” was already in use before the emergence of modern co-operatives, which had a significant potential for economic salvation.

The cooperative model, which is both traditional and reciprocal in functioning, aims to address the economic challenges faced by its members who have willingly joined forces for their mutual benefit.
