ABSTRACT

Starting in the typing pool and working one’s way up the ranks to junior secretary, then senior secretary, and finally personal assistant, was a common path into secretarial employment for individuals who had studied basic shorthand and typing. There has been a marked improvement in the conventional responsibilities and methods of secretarial practice, and secretaries now play an increasingly important part in the success of businesses and the economy as a whole. There are several opportunities in the secretarial field. This work has been really fulfilling, providing me with the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the organisation before venturing into new areas. There will be more openings in retail business houses for people who want to work in administrative communications or public relations, as this is a good place to start. After distributing surveys to gather data on the research questions, the researchers use a mix of descriptive and quantitative analysis to draw conclusions. According to the study’s results, secretaries in Enugu Urban have a lot of room to grow in their careers if they work for retail business houses, which play an important part in the city’s job market. This is not a job for the faint of heart; rather, it calls for secretaries whose main goal is to enrich their clients’ lives by integrating their unique set of experiences and perspectives with their commercial acumen. Additionally, it was determined that secretaries should not be regarded as subordinate employees or slaves when it comes to company administration, but rather as experts in their field. In the end, it was determined that secretaries have the requisite skills or have distinguished jobs that show significant interest in advancing their careers. Therefore, their significance to a country’s economy is immeasurable. Students and working secretaries alike would do well to seek out greater autonomy and greater opportunity for professional growth outside of the confines of the secretarial profession. There should be no ceiling on how high a person may climb the corporate ladder as a secretary; one should demonstrate to the world that they are an expert in their field while also being an effective educator, espionage agent, and executive. This means that secretaries at the organisational level should have an inclination towards self-employment. Prior to retiring or being laid off from their monthly salary-based jobs in the public or private sector, they should have long-term goals of starting their own business.
