CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Whether in the form of monetary or non-monetary compensation, benefits and services provide employees with a real gain.A wider range of optional benefits is being added to the mix every year.

While some fringe benefits have increased due to pressure from trade unions or simple imitation, Ubeku (2015) argues that the current economic climate is mostly to blame.

It would be impossible to rescind an employee perk once it has been granted, he adds. In a related study, Nwachukwu (2014) notes that employers in Nigeria provide a wide range of benefits, some of which are imitative and others competitive.

Some of the most often mentioned benefits of providing employee services are listed by Flippo (1971) and include things like good public relations, improved morale and loyalty, and effective recruitment (here, “effective recruitment” refers to the organization’s capacity to hire and retain the right kind of people).

Nonetheless, the purpose of this research is to look at how the survey incentives program has boosted productivity at the Nigeria Coal Corporation in Enugu and how important it is to the workers there. Its secondary objectives are to determine the extent to which the benefits administration at Nigeria Coal Corporation is comparable with organisational productivity, the extent to which employees are satisfied with their jobs, and the reasons behind their use of all fringe benefits.

Research aims to support the claim that “A survey incentives offered does not necessarily increase productivity but at best, acts as hygiene factors.” It also strives to explain why organisations continue to offer incentive programs to their staff despite this belief.

Statement Of The Problem

The establishment of eleven separate commissions on pay review from 1934 to 1938 was based on the notion that workers in Nigeria would benefit from additional compensation in the form of paid leave, a free health care program, a bonus, a pension, a gratuity, and insurance.

The underlying idea behind all of this was that valuable incentives can encourage people to attain the organization’s aim. At last, the specific incentives that will be offered to workers at the newly formed remain unknown.
