Sustainable Consumption.

INTRODUCTION

The law establishes a Policy for Education on Sustainable Consumption to “encourage the adoption of environmentally sustainable consumer practices and production techniques” (Article 1).

The law defines “sustainable consumption” as “the use of natural resources in order to provide a quality of life for the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations” (Art. 1.1), and one of its nine key objectives is to promote the reduction in consumption of water, energy, and other renewable and non-renewable natural resources at the household level as well as from production, commerce, and services (Art. 2.II).

Other goals include encouraging companies to incorporate social, cultural, and environmental dimensions into their production and management processes, as well as better management of the entire product life cycle (Art 2.V-VI); ensuring the right to information, and promoting environmental labelling and certification (Art 2.VIII).

To attain these goals, federal, state, and municipal governments are encouraged to conduct public awareness and media campaigns, as well as train teachers on how to include sustainable consumption into elementary and secondary education curricula (Art 3.I-II).
