ABSTRACT

THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO DEEPLY INVESTIGATE AND IDENTIFY THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY IN ANAMBRA STATE,

AND HOW THEIR ATTITUDE FOSTERS, ENCOURAGES, PROMOTES, OR RETARDS THE AREA’S DEVELOPMENT SINCE THE FORMATION OF THE ANIDS.

TO CONDUCT THOROUGH RESEARCH, THE RESEARCHER SAMPLED THE POPULATION AND ADMINISTERED QUESTIONNIRE TO THOSE CHOSEN.

THEY WERE ANALYSED USING A SIMPLE PERCENTAGE METHOD. ANAMBRA STATE HAS A LAUDABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY THAT IS DEVELOPMENT ORIENTED AND HAS THE PEOPLE’S INTEREST AT HEART,

BASED ON THE ANALYSIS. IN CONNECTION WITH THE ABOVE, THE RESEARCHER RECOMMENDED THAT THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

AND ASSIST THE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS INITIATED AND EXECUTED BY THE ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT THAT ARE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE TO FOSTER NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEMOCTRACY.

IN CONCLUSION, THE PEOPLE OF ANAMBRA STATE SHOULD WELL COMED THE ROLE OF ANIMALS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THEIR STATUS QUO IN THE AREA OF NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY.

CHAPITRE TWO

1.01 INTRODUCTION

The importance of sustainable democracy as a dependent variable to national development cannot be overstated, as national development is the bedrock of any nation. Whether the country is developed or underdeveloped. They are still working to improve or preserve their national development.

National development is also the gradual appearance of good improvements in a country’s economic, industrial, political, social, cultural, and administrative life. When referring to a country’s development process, the term national development is more inclusive than economic development or economic growth.

Democracy, on the other hand, is a form of governance that allows the people to pick their leaders on a regular basis. It guarantees widespread participation in governmental activities. A managed moderately high and stable level of democracy is thus a sustainable democracy.

After understanding the meanings of the two ideas, National development and sustainable democracy, there is no question that sustainable democracy will aid in increasing the rate of national development due to the unique feature of democracy.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how sustained democracy boosts national development in Anambra State. Furthermore, the obstacles to long-term democracy will not be overlooked.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to a critical study on sustainable democracy and national development, sustained democracy is vital for national development. They showed in Anambra State from 2007 to 2009, when Peter Obi’s administration made enormous efforts to carry out and implement development projects for national growth.

In fact, in order for Obi’s administration to achieve his goal of bringing sustainable democracy to Anambra state in order to foster national development, he introduced Anambra integrated development strategy (ANIDS), which serves as machinery to carry out developmental projects.

However, studies have shown how political, united, and harmonious the Anambra people have become through this technique, accomplishing national progress without waiting for the federal government to take the initiative.

Since the launch of the Anambra integrated development plan (ANIDS), it is considered that national progress and sustained democracy in Anambra state have reached a tipping point.

But, before I outline (explain) the discernible developments obtained in Anambra as a result of this strategy for achieving sustainable democracy, let us investigate and scrutinise what development entails.

The concept of development dates back to the moment of man’s creation and the emergence of his consciousness in his operating environment.

It became clear to him that his immediate secular environment was of a primitive type. A nature that, by definition, is hostile to man’s existence, is based on his three basic needs: food, shelter, and clothing.

As a result, in order to eat, man must hunt, harvest fruits, and develop agricultural technology; in order to be sheltered, he must build houses and develop contraction technology; and in order to clothe,

he must create his cloth and develop manufacturing and mining technology. This suggests that human socioeconomic progress is dependent on technical advancement, which will enable man to overcome environmental limitations that pose a threat to his survival.

Development is one of the most pressing issues confronting developing countries. This is one of the reasons why it is a part of every national debate, with a strong emphasis on it being pursued through planning. The development difficulties are so pervasive that they touch every area of the economy as well as individuals.

Todano (1985) defined development as a multidimensional process that involves the reorganisation and reorientation of the entire economic and social system. This entails fundamental changes in institutional, social, and administrative structure,

as well as popular attitudes, customs, and beliefs, in addition to increased revenue and output. Development is thus both a physical process and a mental condition, involving the modification of institutions as well as a shift in people’s thinking.

According to Abah (2000:1), development is a three-dimensional notion with a utilitarian or consumery component that denotes a growth in the quantity of usable products available to man in society.

According to the above definition of development, it is a social transformation in which new ideas are brought into a social system, resulting in changes in the political, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions.

Rodney (1972) holds the same idea and sees growth from both the individual and societal levels. At the individual level, development implies increased skill and capacity, greater freedom, creativity, self-discipline, responsibility, and material well-being.

At the societal level, development cannot be viewed solely as an economic matter, but rather as an overall social process that is dependent on the outcome of man’s efforts to deal with his national environment.

Based on what we have said thus far about development, I would not hesitate to say that the ANIDS introduced by Peter Obi’s administration have been able to effect some changes in national development and sustainable democracy in some of the areas mentioned and discussed in Anambra’s national development.

Anambra state was established in 1991 and has 21 Local Government Authorities (L.G.A). It has a border with Abia, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Kogi states.

The state is well known for its industrial centres and markets, with 75% of the state engaging in agriculture. Located in Nigeria’s south-east region, Anambra state lies at the crossroads of two major transportation routes, the Onitsha Motorway and the Onitsha Owerri highway. The state’s location makes it a hub for transportation and trade in Nigeria.

The state’s leadership began with the military regime, while democratic governance began with Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife (Okwadike Igboukwu) through military toppled the nascent democracy until 1999, when Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju emerged as the Governor until 2003, when another election was held to replace the then Government.

Dr. Nwabueze Ngige (MOON) was elected President in April 2003, rather than Mr. Peter Obi. The appeal and supreme court then awarded Mr. Obi the power to be the governor of Anambra state on June 14th, 2006.

As a result, as a wise and effective administrator, Peter Obi established the Anambra State Integrated growth Strategy (ANIDS) as a platform for all programmes growth throughout his tenure.

ANIDS functions as a vehicle for the millennium’s delivery. Development of all areas of the economy is also a feasible plan for the Anambra people to achieve their long-term democracy.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is noteworthy that sustainable democracy and national development in Anambra state are challenged by several issues. A detailed examination of development in Anambra state reveals that the problem confronting sustainable democracy and national development is of tremendous size.

There has been an issue with corruption; when representatives corrupt willing elections to their own advantage, they are working against the democratic feature that states elections should be free and fair; corruption contributes to the state’s backwardness.

Second, the judiciary’s reliance is another issue threatening the state’s long-term democracy and national growth. Even when a democratic administration is supposed to be in place, the judiciary, which should be independent,

continues to dance to the melody of both the executive and the judiciary. They are being bribed in the performance of their duties, resulting in a military against sustainable democracy, which will deplete the plans for national growth.

In Nigeria, equality before the law, one of the hallmarks of democracy, is only on paper; in fact, some high government officials breach the law on a regular basis while remaining Scot-free.

Because these senior officials are not charged in court while in office, they believe they are above the law and impede the proper functioning of a viable democracy.

Due to fear of gaining favour, the press is not allowed to disseminate information that is vital to the public. They simply say what is demanded of them, and as a result, sustained democracy cannot be achieved.

Finally, the majority of the populace is unaware of their rights, and they are violated.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this study is to assess sustainable democracy as a dependent variable for achieving national development in Anambra state during Peter Obi’s government from 2007 to 2009.

A critical examination of this will assist the federal government in identifying its weak points in terms of what it has to do to promote national development in the various states of the federation. As a result, the study’s aims are aimed at.

1. Identify the issue that is impeding Anambra State’s sustainable democracy and national growth.

2. Consider how the people of Anambra state have the fortitude to embrace national progress in their communities.

3. Identifying the areas in which the Obi administration played a critical role in bringing national growth to the state.

Suggesting a measure of solution to ease the difficulties impeding national growth and sustained democracy in Anambra state.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is prudent and crucial to note that the study focused primarily on national development and long-term democracy in Anambra state. It is also worth noting that the purpose of this research was to determine how far national growth has contributed to the establishment of long-term democracy in the state.

However, this study demonstrates how states can strategize for development and how to achieve it. Again, the professor and all future generations of persons who may choose to study the discipline or a comparable discipline.

Finally, this study is significant because the study’s findings and recommendations allow the governor of the state to learn from the mistakes of others and make changes when appropriate.

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTION

In order to carry out the research, the researcher felt it was important to develop research questions. As a result of these research questions, each reader of this work will have a clear understanding of what the study is all about.

1. To what extent has Anids contributed to national development and long-term democracy?

2. What are the issues that Anids see as impeding national development and long-term democracy?

3. Do you believe Peter Obi’s Anids plan is the best way to address the problems in Anambra state?

4. Which sectors of Anambra’s economy have been affected by Anids?

What issues do you believe are preventing or delaying the successful deployment of Anids?
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

According to Oruala (1985:38), an appropriate definition of the subject also carefully defines it in terms of its scope, and it is quite evident for a researcher to bring forth the bounds of the topic being examined. These are the basic components of a research project. Based on the aforesaid issue of sustainable democracy as a dependent variable to national development, the Anambra people are the most affected by this study. (from 2007-2009)

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Democracy: Abraham Lincoln, a former president of the United States, described democracy as governance of, by, and for the people.

A new event or stage that is likely to alter what happens in a continuity situation is called development. It could be in both political and economic terms.

It indicates absolutely necessary, exceedingly crucial in a specific context for a specific task.

Ademolekun, Ademolekun (1986:92), Ademolekun, Ademolekun True national development dwells in the development of man, a process by which man’s personality is increased, and it is that enhanced social economic transformation of any society that is the source of true national development.

According to Lorimer et al. (1995), sustainable democracy involves maintaining a reasonably high and steady level of democracy.

The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 6th Edition defines variable as “frequently changing lively to change.”
