TEACHERS DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AND PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IBIONO IBOM LOCAL GOVERNMENT

ABSTRACT

This study focused on teacher’s demographic variable and performance of students in mathematics in some selected secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. The research design was the descriptive survey design, the population of the study comprised of all senior secondary three students in all public secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom, which amounted to 1,787 students. The sample for the study consisted of 100 participants (50 males and 50 females) form 10 public schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. Data were collected using a carefully designed questionnaire with the index (TDVSPMQ) consisting of 20 questions in total and each research question carrying five suggested questions in the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation analysis to answer the research questions and the person product moment correlation coefficient table (PPMC) to statistically test the four hypothesis proposed in this study at 0.01 level of significance. The result of the analyses showed that teacher’s demographic variable significantly influenced performance of students in mathematics among secondary school students in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. The result also reported that there is a high significant influence of teacher’s quality, teacher’s method of teaching, teaching aids used and teacher’s method of evaluation on student’s academic performance in mathematics.

INTRODUCTION/ REVIEW

Mathematics as a subject affects all aspects of human life at different levels. Mathematics is seen by the society as the foundation for scientific technological knowledge which is vital to the socio-economic development of a nation. It is in realization of the vast application of mathematics that made Eraikhuemen (2005) to posit that ‘a disciplined and ordered pattern of life can only be achieve through the culture of mathematics’.

As in the case in the past, most people today still believe that mathematics is all about computation. However, computation for mathematics is merely a tool for comprehending structures, relationships and patterns for mathematical concepts and therefore producing solution for complex real-life problems. It is important for education to adopt instructional design and techniques to attain higher achievement rates in mathematics. (Rasmussen & Marrongelle, 2006).

Student’s academic performance occupies a very important place in education as well as in the learning process. It is considered as a key criterion to judge one’s total potentialities and capabilities which are frequently measured by the examination results, (Nuthana & Yenagi, 2009).

Academic success is affected by a number of factors including teacher’s factors. The quality of teaching and learning in mathematics is a major challenge for educators; general concern about mathematics achievement has been evident in the past years. Academic performance of students has been the subject of intensive research over the past years. It has become an issue of standards and quality in education as judged from the performance of students in national examinations and board examinations. Study habits is the pattern of behaviour adopted by students in pursuit of their studies that serves as the vehicle of learning. It is the degree to which a student engages in regular acts of studying that are characterized by appropriate study routines (e.g. review of materials, frequency of study sessions, etc.) occurring in an environment that is conducive for studying. According to Menzel cited by Rana and  Karsan (2011), many students fail not because they lack ability but because they do not have adequate study skills.

Students are the key assets of any educational institution. The student’s performance plays an important role in producing best quality graduates who will become great leaders and man power for the country’s economic and social development. Academic achievement is one of the major factors considered by employers in hiring workers. Thus, students have to put the greatest effort in their studies to obtain good grades and to prepare themselves for future opportunities in their career. Durden and Ellis quoted Staffolani and Bratti (2002) who observed that the measurement of students’ previous educational outcomes are the most important indicators of student’s future achievement; this refers that the higher the previous academic performance, the better will the student’s academic performance in the future endeavors be. Dayad (2000) mentioned that good teachers are constantly on the alert for methods and instructional materials that will make learning meaningful. With the wise selection and variety of instructional materials or audio-visual materials, experiences may be provided to develop understanding.

This research will be conducted among selected secondary schools in Ibiono Local Government Area, to determine how teacher’s demographic variables affects performance of students in mathematics.
