Introduction

The study’s context
The importance of the quality of individuals who comprise a society is increasing day by day in the development of societies. Education programs have recently included the goal of creating a society of qualified and competent individuals on their agenda. Parallel to the advancement of teaching programs, research into teacher competencies is expanding (Huntly,2008; Bellm,2008; Demirel,2009; Selvi,2010).

Children and youth who will ensure the continuity of society must have good character as well as knowledge. To create serene, content, and successful societies, qualified and well-trained individuals equipped with positive values are required, and thus more resources are provided in Turkey to educate qualified and competent individuals (MEB, 2012:208). Values included in the curriculum allow for the development of positive character traits in addition to field knowledge (MEB, 2004;2006;2009).

With frequent reports of juvenile crimes and anti-social behavior, the moral character of young people has received a lot of media attention in recent years. According to a Yougov poll (Rifkind & Maher, 2008), 49 percent of people believe that children are a danger to both themselves and adults. More than a third (35%) agree that “nowadays it feels like the streets are infested with children,” and 43 percent believe that action is needed to protect them from young people.

The set of understandings of what it means to be a teacher in a given context is known as the teacher role. It is sociohistorically constructed, institutionally supported, and contextualized at the school level in response to community needs. The teacher’s role in character formation First, we should investigate the definition of character. The term “character” refers to the proclivity to behave in ways that are consistent with what one believes to be morally correct.

Any child who is cared for is likely to care for others and to participate in the moral life of the community as a citizen. Character development always starts with a caring relationship. This relationship begins at home with parents and then moves to school with teachers. Character is formed through hard work, security, and courage, among other things. He can also teach him/her to distinguish between what is good and what is bad.

He can teach a student how to put reality to the test. When a student instills this in himself, he will always act morally in all situations in life. He or she will learn from his or her mistakes and will always be truthful, respectable, and accountable to society and the world.

Students’ and teachers’ positive relationships foster trust and respect. By doing so, a student respects others and adapts to society, which is the primary goal of global education. A teacher should also consider the learner’s age when developing characters, as age factors play an important role in this process (https://lifelearners.ng).

Problem identification

The role of a teacher in today’s world has become more difficult and demanding. They have been entrusted with the task of shaping the character of the child and preparing them to be productive members of society. Because of their hectic lives and the need to earn money to secure their children’s future, parents have limited contact with their children.

As an authority figure, friend, and guide, the teacher fills this void. Children in their early stages of education are still developing physically and mentally. Teachers serve as role models for them and have a unique opportunity to influence and guide their students.

If they play their roles well, the student will understand the significance of the positive traits and values that have been instilled in him. Based on this, the researcher wishes to investigate the role of teachers in the character formation of secondary school students in the owerri municipal district.
