TEENAGE PREGNANCY: THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

TEENAGE PREGNANCY: THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Every year, a staggering number of teenagers give birth. In fact, teenagers account for nearly a million of the slightly more than 10% of all births worldwide. Before we proceed, we’ll need to understand what teenage pregnancy is all about. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, teenage pregnancy refers to children aged 13 to 19.

Nigeria has one of the highest adolescent birth rates in the world, and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, among female adolescents in Nigeria is rapidly increasing.

Nigeria developed a national reproduction health policy in the year 2000 that focuses on preventing risk sexual behaviors during adolescence in an effort to reduce the high pregnancy rate among teenagers, among other problems (national Population commission, Nigeria demographic and Health Survey, 1999, Abuja, Nigeria the Commission 2000).

Pregnancy and motherhood mark the end of school attendance in Nigeria, and by the age of 16, 21 percent of female adolescents are either pregnant or have given birth. Teenagers face daily pressure from teachers and peers, and they are subjected to the relentless influence of TV movies, the music industry, and the internet, among other things. Unfortunately, children are too young to deal with the consequences of pregnancy.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

This project will investigate the causes and consequences of adolescent pregnancy. Millions of children return home from school to an empty house because both parents are working class, causing many teenagers to set the stage for adolescent pregnancy. Many parents believe that their children will be taught sex education in school, despite the fact that schools have failed to meet that demand.

So there is no good foundation for sex education both in school and at home, and the media has a strong influence. Teenagers are more likely to practice these behaviors in real life and have multiple sexual partners because they spend more time watching sex and violence on TV. Children in this computer age do not need to have a computer in their homes before using one, and computer use has increased in many countries, including Nigeria.

And sexual materials of all kinds are easily accessible via the internet unsupervised internet may expose teenagers to pornographic and sex chat rooms, some teenagers are willing to accept sex if paid, and some adults encourage teens sex by intentionally taking advantage of their poverty. Most parents fail to understand their children and, as a result, do not have a close relationship with their children, making it difficult to confide in their partners.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

School-age girls who become pregnant come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, races, and regions of the country. (Both rural and urban) Many teenagers are faced with the dilemma of an unwanted pregnancy and parenthood. It has an impact on society, the nation, and the world in general, and their decisions will have far-reaching consequences for the future of their communities, countries, and the rest of the world.

The project’s main goal is thus to assist any youth facing the dilemma of an unwanted pregnancy, as well as to provide practical suggestions for adolescents in avoiding the pitfall of becoming pregnant and becoming parents unexpectedly.

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The importance of having teenagers make good decisions, choose appropriate friends, value others, and become better mothers and fathers. Now that there is so much debate and confusion about sex and morals, this project has become very relevant to our moral society and the nation, and making (practical suggestions) available to all at the appropriate time has become the next priority.

HYPOTHESIS

There is no discernible difference between parental neglect of children and adolescent pregnancy.

1. There are no significant differences between close parental relationships and teenage pregnancy.

2. There is no statistically significant relationship between peer group influence and adolescent pregnancy.

3. There is no statistically significant relationship between sex education knowledge (at school or at home) and adolescent pregnancy.

5. There is a significant difference between media and computer exposure and teen pregnancy.
