THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING AMONG OUR SOCIETY’S WOMEN

THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING AMONG OUR SOCIETY’S WOMEN

ABSTRACT

This project investigates the causes and effects of human trafficking among our society’s youths, using the OREDOLocal Government Area of Edo State as a case study. The study is necessary due to the alarming rate of increase of human trafficking among young people in the investigated area. The analysis revealed that human trafficking causes a total moral breakdown in peaceful marriages or homes, ends academic careers, and contributes to a negative national image or reputation for the state.

This study’s purpose is to reduce or eliminate human trafficking among all state residents. Therefore, the researcher recommends that sex education be taught in all schools and that mass media be used to properly educate parents and adolescents.

Moral or religious education should be a required component of the school curriculum because it can aid in problem-solving. Government and non-government agents should educate all state residents on the dangers of human trafficking and incorporate the topic into the curriculum.

INTRODUCTION

CONTEXT OF THE STUDY

Modern-day human trafficking is a recent addition to the dictionary of global ills. Intensity of corruption varies from region to region and country to country, despite its global prevalence. The occurrence of human trafficking tends to be systematic, especially as its scope expands as the globalization process intensifies. Although it existed in the past in forms such as prostitution, modern child trafficking is an organized business. Since the dawn of time, women and children have been the victims of human trafficking.

In the early 1900s, this practice, which had persisted for centuries, finally became a political issue. In 1902, the international agreement to suppress the transatlantic slave trade was drafted. Its purpose was to prevent the procreation of women and children for immoral purposes by restricting access to contraceptives (Asem, 2001). The United Nations deemed it necessary to address the issue of human trafficking in the middle of the country due to its continuing growth.

This was accomplished by the 1949 convention for the suppression of human trafficking and the exploitation of prostitution, which was withdrawn by 49 countries worldwide. Millions of women, men, and children continue to be kidnapped and transported from their homes, and some are even sold by their families for meager sums.

In many parts of the world, particularly in developing nations, men and women are enticed with the promise of a good job in a foreign country. Unaware of the impending torture, they chose to leave their home country because they had no other options (Amnesty international 2004).

In addition to being enticed with the promise of a good job, there are instances in which men who intend to sell women into servitude send them bogus marriage proposals. There are also instances in which parents who are attempting to make money sell their daughters into the sex trade.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to determine the causes and effects of human trafficking in Nigeria in order to improve the economy and the living conditions of the country’s citizens. Poverty and economic constraints are one of the primary causes of human trafficking; therefore, the government must be able to provide jobs for the people and improve the standard of our economy. If the government is able to do this, the rate of human trafficking will be reduced to a minimum.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to examine the causes and effects of human trafficking in Nigeria and to suggest possible solutions to this problem in OREDOLocal Government Area of Edo State so that the people in the country can enjoy a higher standard of living. When a solution to this problem is found, our economy will improve more quickly and create more jobs. To achieve this goal in Egor, the government must be able to enforce laws and provide appropriate solutions to the causes and consequences of human trafficking in Nigeria.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

People who will benefit from this study include the government, individuals, students, market women, the local government area (Egor) where the research is being conducted, and the instructor. This study is conducted in OREDO in order to make recommendations regarding the causes and effects of human trafficking in Nigeria.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The researcher will endeavor to examine the following hypotheses:

Are poverty and economic constraints among the leading causes of human trafficking?

Does a high rate of illiteracy result in a high rate of human trafficking?

Does the prevalence of human trafficking impede development?

Does it frustrate the youth of the OREDO Local Government Area in the state of Edo?

Does human trafficking contribute to the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS?

SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH

The purpose of this study is to identify the types of individuals who engage in human trafficking, namely youths, men, and women, who engage in these activities due to poverty, economic constraints, unemployment, and lack of education, among other factors.

The scope of this study includes the causes and effects of human trafficking among youths in OREDOLGA, Edo State. A focus would be placed on the actual causes and effects of the human trafficking problem, and suggestions for its eradication will be made.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The term ‘trafficking’ refers to the movement of people from one country to another for the purpose of earning a pitiful sum of money for daily subsistence.

This pertains to humans, as opposed to God or animals, in terms of possessing emotional qualities.

Human trafficking is a practice in which individuals are exploited for monetary gain by third parties.
