THE CAUSES OF STUDENT DEVIANT AND DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR

THE CAUSES OF STUDENT DEVIANT AND DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Deviant and delinquent behavior is a major issue in today’s society. Egyptian priests carried on a stone some years ago that our earth has degenerated, and children no longer obey their parents. Johnson (1995) The increased deviant and delinquent behavior among students at Emotan Girls Grammar School has piqued the interest of many people.

We hear a twist of deviant and delinquent causes being attributed to Emotan girls’ grammar school today while reading Nigerian daily newspapers and listening to radio and television. Gone are the days when students took pride in being in school, strived for excellence in class work, and looked to the future with a youthful and innocent outlook. This is no longer the case.

People involved in children’s upbringing have observed a wide range of behavior, from simple vices like lying about their age to drinking alcohol that leads to misbehavior. Anti-social behavior is on the rise at Emotan Girls Grammar School, with students attacking teachers, destroying school property, and attempting to rape their female counterparts among others.

The increased occurrence of these deviant and delinquent acts is now causing great concern among parents, teachers, and social workers who are responsible for raising these children. This implies that the source of the deviant and delinquent behavior at Emotan Girls Grammar School must be identified and preventative measures implemented.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The investigator’s experience as a teacher inspired the decision to conduct a study on the causes of deviant and delinquent behavior. In school, there are usually cases of students stealing, truancy, smoking India hemp, and so on. The importance of students in national development cannot be overstated, but what hope does the nation have when the students who are supposed to build the nation engage in various vices and crimes? There is no doubt that these students’ behavior has a negative impact on them and the students around them. As a result, the following questions are central to this study:

1. What effect does social and economic factors have on students’ deviant and delinquent behavior?

2. Does watching television cause students to be deviant?

3. Is there a connection between peer group pressure and deviance and delinquency?

4. What effect does parental behavior have on deviant and delinquent behavior in students?

5. Does emotional deprivation lead to deviant behavior in students?

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This research aims to identify the root causes of deviant and delinquent behavior in Emotan Girls Grammar School, particularly those related to the home, because charity begins at home. The research will also make recommendations on how to eliminate deviant and delinquent behavior from the Emotan girls’ grammar school.

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The study’s findings are hoped to be useful to parents, teachers, psychologists, and social workers. The findings will also serve as a useful source of literature on the causes of deviant and delinquent behavior.

It is hoped that the study’s findings will also serve as a foundation for relevant preventive measures in deviant and delinquent behavior.

QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
