THE DEMAND FOR COUNSELING CENTRES IN SECONDARY SCHOOL “PROBLEMS AND PROSPECT”
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
It would be extremely beneficial to discuss guidance and counseling and how it came to Nigeria. Before delving into the need for a counseling center in a secondary school in Edo state, I will first examine the terms guidance and counseling, which can be used separately or interchangeably, though they are not required syndromes. Guidance is an umbrella term for both guidance and counseling, while counseling is an essential component of guidance.
Some authors claim that attempts to distinguish between guidance and counselling have resulted in no discernible degree of meaning. They go on to say that the distinctions are artificial and that the terms could be interchangeable.
Downing (1992) defines guidance as “assistance given to enable a person to gain clarification of the essence of this like.” The essence is meaningful selfhood, individual freedom, dignity, equality of opportunity, responsible citizenship, and meaningful activity in work and leisure.
Shertzer and Stone (1996) define guidance as a process that assists an individual in better understanding himself and the people with whom he interacts. It is also the process of assisting an individual in discovering his or her vocational, social, and psychological potentials, as well as development.
Mertin et al. (1995) defined counseling as a process that occurs in a pone-relationship between an individual who is faced with a problem that he cannot cope with alone and a professional worker whose training and experience qualify him to assist others in arriving at a solution interaction that occurs between two individuals that is a counselor and a client or counselee
Counseling, according to Eduwen (1994), is a contact between a counselor and a counselee to help him overcome his crises, whereas guidance and counseling services are desirable responses to social needs and aspirations.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
A counseling center is necessary at all levels of education; however, there is no record of any counseling centers in secondary schools in Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area. Due to a lack of counseling, these students are unable to identify their talents. Furthermore, many students are unaware of the significance of education and the work that surrounds them, and as a result, they do not take their surroundings seriously.
All principals, heads of schools, and parents believe that the purpose of education is solely for the child to acquire knowledge, but this is not the case. The goal of education will be well defined if students can choose a trade or vocation based on their interests or ambitions.
With no counseling centers in secondary schools, the number of school dropouts, juvenile delinquency, armed robbery, and other social ills such as disrespect for constituted authorities and a slew of others will continue to rise.
