THE DUAL ROLE OF BUSINESS EDUCATION IN THE NIGERIAN ECONOMY WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SECRETARIAL EDUCATION

 

ABSTRACT

The Dual Role of Business Education was the basis for this study. In the Nigerian Economy, with Special Reference to Secretarial Education, its objectives are highlighted, emphasizing the benefits to both the individual and the society.

The role of Business Education is then examined in order to alert authorities to the consequences of not encouraging Business Education as a means of overcoming the problems of current unemployment.

This study was guided by four research questions. For the study, a survey research design was used. The study’s population included forty final-year students from the Department of Secretarial Studies at the Federal College of Education Technical Akoka.

The data was gathered using a structured questionnaire with fifteen items. The data was gathered and analyzed using a four-point Likert scale. It was discovered that Business Education is essential to the Nigerian economy because it exposes students to the world of work and informs them about the rewarding careers available in Business Education.

Findings also revealed, among other things, that a lack of adequate facilities to teach and develop the necessary skills is jeopardizing the mission of Business Education. Based on the findings, it was suggested that the government/stakeholders provide adequate funding to equip laboratories for teaching and learning typing, shorthand, and computer applications.

It would undoubtedly encourage competence in the skills after graduation, and secondly, Secretarial/Business Education teachers should be trained to make them more relevant.

 

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Despite the fact that business education is frequently described as “education FOR and ABOUT business” (Nwosu, 1999), its primary goal is to prepare individuals for gainful employment in business occupations. Whether through paid or self-employment, the emphasis is on exposure to, and acquisition of, knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are

relevant and adequate for employment in specific business occupations. As a result, the value of any business education can be determined by its ability to adequately prepare and equip individuals so that they can fit into specific jobs or start their own businesses after graduation.

Business education is also defined as education that prepares students for entry into and/or advancement in jobs in business, as well as preparing them to manage and function in their own businesses. As consumers and citizens in a business economy, act wisely (Popham 1975). According to Anao (1986), business education can simply be defined as an educational process or content whose primary goal is to prepare people for roles in business enterprises.

A review of the roles of business education is required in order to determine the roles that it plays or should play in the Nigerian economy. Some of the major roles reflect students’ prior education and experience, career needs, learning objectives, and personal aspirations.

(1) It provides adult students with career counseling in order to increase their awareness of various job opportunities and changing requirements for career entry and advancement.

Business education is entirely vocational in the sense that the recipient is prepared for a variety of roles, such as business teacher, office worker, and information collector for personal use. It is a broad discipline that includes a variety of specialized areas such as secretarial studies, accounting, business management, distributive education, computer studies, and marketing.

One of the educational systems that provides employable skills is business education, which focuses on the acquisition of secretarial skills. What is particularly significant about secretaryship is that the skill will continue to be in high demand, and those who possess it will never be out of work.

Anao (1987), speaking on the role of business education in a developing economy, defined secretarial education as the educational process or context that prepares people for enterprise as employed entrepreneurs/employers or self-employed.

Secretarial studies, like many other academic programs, had a humble beginning in Nigeria. This is due in part to the method and nature of the training. Secretarial training was primarily left in the hands of “roadside” trainers, which led to the academic snobbery of being a “dropout” program.

However, this snobbery was quickly erased after independence, when the country decided to vocationalize education in order to address the country’s unemployment problems at the time (Onabamiro 1982). As a result, secretarial studies (an essential component of business education studies) were given due recognition in the formal educational system. (FRN, 1998) Formalized paraphrase

 

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The world, in particular, is becoming more complex by the day, while the labor market is becoming increasingly saturated. Nigeria’s economy has not been encouraging in recent years. There has been a significant increase in unemployment, which has resulted in some other diverse crimes, such as robbery, which now comes in different forms other than the traditional way of carrying a gun.

Business education could be a pathway to a thriving economy. What is the standard of Business Education in Nigeria? What is the attitude of parents toward business education? Another issue is the ambiguity surrounding the operational definition of business education in Nigeria. This study is interested in finding answers to these questions.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this research is to determine the role of business education in the Nigerian economy. It is also intended to alert authorities to the implications of not encouraging Business Education as a means of overcoming current unemployment problems.

 

1.4 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

This research is significant for students because it will provide them with the knowledge that business education provides them with the necessary skills that will make them relevant in the workplace. Parents would also value the subject as a career option for their children in the future.

To the government and society, it will raise awareness of the government’s educational philosophy, which is to foster the worth and development of the individual for the sake of each individual and the overall development of society.

1. What are the advantages of business education in the Nigerian economy?

2. What is the role of secretarial education in the Nigerian economy?

3. Is there a sufficient number of qualified teachers to teach secretarial education?

4. How readily available are the resources and materials required for adequate training in this program?

 

1.6 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The scope of this study is limited to students in their final year of year three (secretarial studies) at Federal College of Education Technical Akoka.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

This study has a number of limitations. Family obligations, insufficient funding, time constraints in gathering information, and so on.

When other academic commitments are considered, time is a factor, as is money as a means of moving around in the source of materials and information, as well as respondents’ attitudes in responding to questions objectively.
