ABSTRACT
Like other bitters, kaka bitters are said to have several traditional medicinal benefits, such as reducing cholesterol. However, as of the time of this investigation, no scientific evidence was available to support this assertion. By evaluating its effects on the blood lipid parameters of wistar rats fed a diet supplemented with fat, the lipid-lowering properties of kaka bitters were examined. Group 1 rats were given regular feed and distilled water, Group 2 rats were given a fat-enhanced diet and distilled water, and Group 3 rats were given a fat-enhanced food with Kaka bitters. According to the results, group 3 rats’ blood TG levels dropped when compared to group 2, although the difference was not statistically significant (p < 0.05). Additionally, group 3 rats’ blood HDL levels decreased statistically significantly, whereas group 2 rats’ total cholesterol and LDL levels increased statistically significantly as well (p < 0.05). The alcoholic character of Kaka bitters and their antibacterial properties against the gut microbiota involved in cholesterol metabolism and excretion may be the cause of the hyperlipidemic impact of Kaka bitters, as revealed by this result. Dyslipidaemia cannot be effectively treated with kaka bitters.
