CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 

There are many explanations put forth for why students perform poorly in school, but two main ones are teachers’ and parents’ negligence of their duties. Parents appear to rely solely on teachers with the expectation that they will instantly transform their kids into academic experts, and anything that falls short of this expectation renders the teacher’s behavior unacceptable.

 

Few people care to consider other causes of students’ subpar school performances. Unfortunately, the importance of these factors makes the significant efforts made by teachers to support students’ academic goals useless. It is generally acknowledged that a child’s academic success depends not only on the school he attends but also on the education and preparation for a career that child has received outside of the classroom. It might come from the family, the neighborhood, or the peer group.

Some extremely intelligent students suffered because their parents’ attitudes prevented them from giving them the supplies they needed for school and at home.

 

It seems that researchers have discovered that children who have supportive parents who meet their educational needs always perform well in school. It was found that many parents are unaware of how crucial it is to keep their kids in school past a certain point. They preferred to have their kids assist them in their line of work, and those who preferred to keep them in school never bothered to follow up by looking over their kids’ notes. The children’s performance in school suffers as a result of this medium.

 

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

 

The effect of parents’ educational backgrounds on students’ performances in Egor L. G. A. of Edo State has been influenced by a wide range of factors. The educational background of the parents may have a positive or negative impact on the performance of the student.

For instance, offering materials and resources that can aid in learning Some families may be steadfast in upholding cultural values, which may have an impact on their children. For instance, parents may assume that their children should have a specific career in mind.

 

Adefemiwa (1995) claimed that when students are given academic assignments to complete at home, some take them seriously and come back with subpar work completed, while others make no attempt. Additionally, some students responded favorably while others disagreed when asked to bring materials from home to support their learning.

 

The researcher therefore plans to look into the factors influencing students’ academic performances. In order to achieve this, the research work aims to answer the following questions;

 

1) Poor academic performance at school can result from a broken home

 

2) Poor academic performance may result from parents’ lack of education.

 

3) Failure to meet students’ educational needs can also have a negative impact on their academic performance.

 

4) The environment can also contribute to students’ subpar academic performance.

 

AIM OF THE STUDY

 

This study aims to investigate how parents’ educational backgrounds affect their children’s academic performance. The difficulties that parents encountered while in school or the nature of the jobs they held that required them to neglect their family responsibilities have been ways to deprive the kids of their strong academic performances. The reduction of students’ subpar performance will be addressed.

 

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

 

This project would highlight the value of parents who have strong academic backgrounds and how that can either positively or negatively impact their children’s academic performance. Some of the population sample’s children who are older or intelligenter than average with sufficient sensory acuity, whose parents have solid academic backgrounds and have access to all of the opportunities, perform less well than might be expected. This might be taken as evidence of educational disparity.

 

STUDY QUESTION

 

The subsequent research inquiries are developed;

 

1) Does meeting students’ educational needs have an impact on their performance?

 

2) Does the use of audiovisual equipment affect students’ performance?

 

3) Does student academic performance improve when teachers are appreciated?

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 

All primary schools in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area are the only ones included in this study. The goal of the study is to determine how parents’ academic performance affects their children’s academic performance.

 

TERM DEFINITIONS

 

In this study, a few terms are used that have a particular meaning related to the study. Academic background, educational disparity, parents, student performance, education, and teachers are a few of the terms mentioned.

 

Academic: This relates to the teaching or learning of subjects that are intended to impart skills.

 

People with strong academic backgrounds and ample opportunities who achieve significantly less than what is expected despite their strong academic backgrounds and opportunities.

 

Academic background: A person’s specific educational history

 

Father or mother of the person

 

A person being taught, especially a student in school, is referred to as a pupil.

 

Education: The process of imparting knowledge and fostering skill development, particularly in schools or colleges.

 

Teacher: Someone who imparts knowledge to others.
