THE EFFECT OF EMPLOYMENT ON SANDWICH GRADUATE AT THE LABOUR MARKET

Abstract

The Higher Education Statistics Agency is in charge of collecting statistical data on graduates’ first destinations six months after graduation. This study looks at the first destination returns to see if there is a link between work experience and postgraduate activity, specifically whether graduates with work experience are more likely to find early employment than those without.

Participation in additional education and unemployment are also examined.

Overall, the study found that graduates who completed a sandwich placement as part of their program of study were more likely than full-time graduates to secure full-time paid employment within six months of graduation. Full-time graduates, on the other hand, continued their education at a higher rate than sandwich graduates.

Regardless of undergraduate work experience, the percentage of unemployed graduates was similar.
A more in-depth examination by subject area revealed that these broad trends were mirrored across various disciplines.

However, the extent to which sandwich graduates benefited differed by subject: science and language sandwich graduates did not have a significant advantage over full-time graduates in the same subjects, whereas sandwich graduates in other subjects, such as engineering, did.
