The study’s purpose is to determine whether monetary policy in Ghana constrains bank lending. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis employs panel cross-sectional data from the Bank of Ghana’s database, ISSER, and the IMF’s International Financial Statistics from 1998 to 2004.
The freely allocated bank loan represents the bank loan, which is apparently more susceptible to changes in monetary policy. Changes in the money supply and the prime rate of the central bank are proxies for monetary policy.
Findings – According to the study, Ghanaian banks’ lending behavior is highly influenced by the country’s economic activities and variations in the money supply. The findings of this study back up previous findings that the central bank’s prime rate and inflation rate have a negative but statistically insignificant impact on bank lending.
The study finds that bank size and liquidity have a major impact on banks’ ability to grant credit when it is requested. Originality/value – The fundamental contribution of this study is the identification of monetary policy parameters influencing bank lending behavior in Ghana.
