Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the factors influencing poor teacher-student relationships in academic attainment in Enugu Urban, Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The following research questions were developed for a successful research project:

(i) To what extent do professors use free time to engage students in friendly conversations?

(ii) To what extent do professors lavish praise on their students in class?

(iii) How do professors discipline and react to students in class when their attention is required?

(iv) How much flexibility do professors provide their students in class?

The study’s population consisted of all elementary school teachers in Enugu Urban Local Government Area. A total of 250 teachers were chosen by stratified random sampling, and ten elementary schools were also chosen for the study. Questionnaires were used to obtain information.

The mean was used to analyse the data. According to the data, the level to which teachers use leisure time to engage students in friendly discussion leads to a bad teacher-student connection in academic success in Enugu City. One of the primary issues affecting teacher-student relationships in Enugu is the extent to which teachers use praise on students in class.

Furthermore, the way teachers react to students in class when their attention is required leads to a poor teacher-student relationship in Enugu Urban primary schools. Finally, the manner in which teachers allow students freedom in the classroom has an impact on the poor teacher-student relationship in primary schools in Enugu (South) Urban Local Government Area, Enugu State.

Chapter One

Introduction

(i) Background Of The Study

Education is a highly regarded public enterprise that serves as a premier tool for national development. The five national objectives of Nigeria in the second National Development Plan lend credence to this viewpoint, which is endorsed as the necessary foundation for the National Policy on Education.

Based on the use of education as a tool for achieving national objectives, the following outcomes are expected from education in national devilment:

Improved human relationships

Realisation of oneself

Individual and national solidarity

These goals will never be realised if the teacher and his students have a poor relationship. Bringing these goals to fruition is dependent on the educational system’s orientation of instructors and students, because successful education requires skilled and devoted teachers who will guide students along the road to attain educational goals.

As a result, the goal of introducing this study or subject is to make the teacher/pupil functional in relating well with one another and carrying out their respective roles in order to meet the goals of the National Policy on Education.

The philosophy of education placed a premium on human interaction during the teaching and learning process. It is regarded that teaching is a serious job and should be treated as such.

As a banker is governed by certain principles that enable him to be an expert in his field, a teacher is governed by certain principles that enable him to be an expert in his own area of specialisation.

Teaching is the process of instilling in a learner desirable information, culture, skills, values, and norms that will enable him to be valuable to himself and the larger society.

To foster the relationship between the teacher and the students, the teacher must first determine the most efficient and successful methods of teaching, and then select resources to create favourable learning experiences that will use the information linked with each target.

However, in order to improve children, pedagogy must be studied; otherwise, there is nothing to hope for. To that aim, any procedure must be thoroughly examined before usage. This is where philosophy enters the picture. So the art of education must wait for a design of action based on philosophy.

There are numerous theoretical models that philosophers and educators have developed based on their best or frame of mental dispositions. For example, nationalists emphasised motivation, direct experience, and sustaining the child’s interest.

Their primary concern is to create an appropriate environment in order to influence an individual’s development. Pragmatists advocate socialised procedures, projects, and problem-solving approaches. Regardless of how diverse and diverse these schools are, they all focus on a common problem militating against education, the goals of education, the nature of the learner, educational content, method, and the conditions under which the learners can gain the most experience.

Furthermore, given the foregoing context, researchers are challenged to determine the impact of poor teacher-student relationships on academic achievement in primary schools. A case study from the Enugu South Local Government Area.

(ii) Statement Of The Problem

Poor academic performance, formation of bad gangs by pupils, perpetual hatred of teachers, and neglect of some subjects (for example, English Language) have all resulted from poor teacher-student relationships in Enugu Urban primary schools, posing serious problems for the achievement of educational objectives.

Unfortunately, many students have lost the values of good behaviour since their professors no longer show them love, care, and affection. This is available to students from low-income families. Many of our students have little regard for their parents, instructors, or elders.

Teachers keep moaning about their students’ attitudes anytime they see them on the street, at the market, or at their homes, not realising that they are the cause of the terrible attitude they observe in their students.

There have been reports of students hiding away from their teachers when they encounter them, calling their teachers names that are not their true names, and so on.

As a result, until the variables that contribute to bad teacher-student relationships are favourably addressed/addressed, the national education objectives will never be realised.

(iii) Objective Of The Study

The goal of this study is to identify the elements that influence bad teacher-student relationships in elementary schools in Enugu Urban (A case study in Enugu South).

Significantly, the research will seek to accomplish the following:

i. To learn how much time teachers spend in their spare time engaging their students in polite conversation.

ii. To ascertain the extent to which professors employ motivation on their students in their classes.

iii. To learn how teachers react to students in class when they raise questions.

iii. Determine the extent to which professors allow students freedom during their break hour.

(iv) Significance Of The Research

This study is being conducted to evaluate the impact of poor teacher-student relationships on academic achievement in elementary schools in Enugu Urban, Enugu South Local Government Area.

The work will benefit all education stakeholders, including instructors, students, parents, and the entire educational system.

The researchers’ work will benefit instructors by providing them with a sense of direction by assisting them in understanding and knowing why students perform below par academically in Enugu Urban elementary schools in Enugu South.

Additionally, the work will benefit students as they gain more knowledge, which will change their academic performance from negative to positive as their relationship with them improves. In the instance of the Ministry of Education, they will benefit from having their names published in their magazine after being recognised for excellence.

The Ministry of Education might also offer them subsidies to keep the schools running in all activities such as sports and other necessary equipment, making the schools an asset to the management rather than a liability.

(v) Scope of the Research

The researchers confine this study to a particular geographical zone that is concerned (Enugu elementary schools, Enugu South) in order to carry out an effective and successful work.

Researchers also studied materials including as text books, journals, and periodicals, as well as sampling certain primary schools in the Enugu Urban Enugu South Local Government Area.
