CHAPTER ONE
STUDY BACKGROUND
One of the most important decisions in a student’s life is choosing a career. This decision will affect them for the rest of their lives. The essence of who the students are will revolve around what they want to do with their career choice. The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, 6th Edition of Current English defines choice as the right or possibility of choosing, and career as a job or profession, particularly one with opportunities for advancement.
According to Johnson (1976), a career is one’s lifework, which includes a variety of occupations, vocations, or jobs that one person engages in during his or her working life. The sequence of occupations and other life roles that combine to express one’s commitment to work in his or her total pattern of self development is referred to as a career.
Parents’ educational and occupational backgrounds may influence students’ career choices because some students may consider continuing in their parents’ occupation or not. What students see on television may also influence their career choice. Some jobs require you to have the personality to match the job’s requirements. For these reasons, the importance of a guidance counselor in schools cannot be overstated.
A career guidance counsellor is required to avoid untrustworthy and dangerous sources of career information, such as culture peer groups, which can unintentionally lead to them graduating into armed robbery and other criminal business.
This study, which will be conducted in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, will be useful to guidance counsellors in assisting senior students in their career as well as the ministry of education in curriculum planning to broaden the students’ career choice opportunities through educational system curriculum content.
A school, according to National Policy on Education, is incomplete without a counselor’s office. If you are teaching biology and the child is not understanding it, there must be some issues that need to be addressed. It is possible that the child’s concentration is being affected by psychological issues.
The child may not make any progress until you solve that problem. Both public and private schools require advancement. Counsellors are required in tertiary institutions as well. Everyone requires counseling.
The following are some of the factors that may influence your career choice:
i. Economic and socioeconomic factors
ii. Individual or family characteristics
iii. Cultural factors, which include schools, peer groups, and age groups
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Influence of parents on career decisions When discussing careers or career information, parents can provide input, but the final decision is made by the chooser. The blame for the increase in deviant behavior among students falls on us, the mothers of these children. Our mothers worked hard to raise the children. Both generations of mothers have allowed their homes to fall apart.
If homes are in ruins and a school counsellor is brought in to talk to these children, the impact will be minimal. Children from stable homes, on the other hand, are more likely to benefit from the school counsellor. I believe a counsellor can sense the vacuum created by some parents’ failure to care for their children, but the end result is often exceptionally wonderful roles.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The study’s main goal is to investigate the impact of career choice on secondary school students in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area. It will also investigate to what extent the factors influencing career choice will benefit or harm students.
QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
1. Is there a need for senior secondary school students to learn about career options?
2. Is a student’s career choice influenced by his or her peer group?
3. Is there a reason for reading as a career choice in schools, and is it beneficial to students?
4. Does a student’s career choice affect their academic performance?
THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE
The significance of this research work is to determine to what extent the factors influencing choice will influence students’ career choices and attendance performance on the subjects that will lead them successfully towards this occupation as a life time endeavor.
a. It will allow the researcher to provide career advice to students.
b. It will allow the researcher to make necessary recommendations to parents regarding their children’s receptivity to advice on their career choice.
c. It will enable the researcher to make recommendations to school administrations.
d. It will allow the researcher to make concrete recommendations to the government about secondary school students’ career choices, which is especially important given the high unemployment rate.
THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE
The study focuses on secondary school students in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area and their career choices.
This study will focus on five randomly selected secondary schools in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area. Four of them are public, while one is private. The following schools were chosen at random.
Iyoba Girls College is number one.
Uselu Secondary School is number two.
Uwagboe Secondary School is number three.
College of Technology
Adolor College is number five.
TERMS DEFINITION
CAREER – A chosen course of business activity or enterprise, particularly one’s professional life or employment that provides advancement and honor.
EFFECT – The ability to cause a change in someone or something.
INFLUENCE- The power that someone or something has to influence someone or something in a specific way, such as influencing a parent’s choice of career for their children.
PROSPECT: The likelihood of success in a good job/employment/career prospect.
SCHOOL: A school is a place where children can receive an education. The process of learning in a school; the period of your life during which you attend school.
EXAMINATION – A formal written, spoken, or practical test, usually given in schools or colleges, to determine how much you know about a subject or what you can do to sit for an exam and pass it.
SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: These students range in age from 15 to 18 years old and are enrolled in SSS 1-SSS 3 classes.
GOVERNMENT: The group of people in charge of governing a country or state.
