THE IMPACT OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON CHILDREN’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Research has proven beyond doubt that learning is more effective when as many serves as possible are used, and sight is the most powerful of all the serves. As a result, the need to present information to students visually as well as verbally is now widely acknowledged.
In schools today, the emphasis is on qualitative and quantitative, curriculum contents, techniques, and methods of teaching of qualified teachers, with a significant increase in the number of schools and students enrolled, and the quality and quantity of teachers are required to match this increase in student enrolment.
Educational technology cannot be dismissed as a form of instructional innovation. “The gradual shift toward the use of instructional materials in education has been encouraged by increased availability of effective appropriate and convenient materials, devices, machines, and classroom facilities designed for improving instruction,
” write Broom and Thornton (1960). Media and technology for learning have influenced education throughout history. Tills, which have recently invaded instructional settings, offer powerful possibilities for improving the learning process.
To supplement the available instructional resources and qualified teachers, instructional materials must be used. In Nigeria, the current use of instructional materials in schools is very low and unsatisfactory. The following are some ways that instructional materials can help to improve education quality.
1. Instructional materials give teachers the tools they need to foster creativity in their students’ minds.
2. Instructional materials facilitate the learning process.
3. It enables the teacher to motivate students to learn.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Statistics show that the majority of our primary school teachers no longer use instructional materials when teaching, which has a negative impact on the teaching and, as a result, the academic performance of the students.
Some of these effects include the students’ inability to concretize the lesson that has been taught, as well as their inability to visualize what the teacher is teaching because they do not have a mental picture of what the teacher is conveying to them. This causes students to easily forget what they have learned in school.
Without the use of instructional materials, learning becomes boring for students, and they can easily lose interest when there is nothing to motivate them to learn, so whatever the teacher is teaching them, they cannot easily assimilate it. Again, when instructional materials are not used when teaching, students become passive and are unable to participate in class activities.
They primarily become passive listeners, which reduces their thinking ability and prevents them from reasoning things out on their own. Statistics also show that most primary schools lack these instructional materials, as well as trained teachers who understand how to use them.
This lack of instructional materials in the teaching learning process prompted the researcher to investigate the role of instructional materials and their effects on primary school pupil performance.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The following is the research’s objective:
1. Determine the types of instructional materials available in primary schools in Edo State’s Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area.
2. To ascertain the extent to which primary school teachers make use of instructional materials.
3. Identify the factors that work against the use of instructional materials in primary school.
4. To find a long-term solution to the issues of instructional materials availability and use in primary school.
QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
1. Can improper use of instructional materials have an impact on students’ academic performance?
2. What are the effects of instructional materials on students’ academic performance?
3. Does the lack of instructional materials have an impact on student performance?
4. Do instructional materials have an impact on students’ academic performance?
THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE
The research grinds would be used for the following purposes:
To begin, the findings of this research will be used to inform primary school teachers about the importance of using audio materials in the teaching and learning process. Second, the findings of this research would be used to encourage the government and school administration to provide primary school instructional materials.
Third, the research study’s findings would be used to inform school administrators about the importance of providing in-service training and learning opportunities. Finally, it would encourage the government to hold seminars and workshops to teach teachers how to use instructional materials.
THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE
This research will focus on ten randomly selected primary schools in Edo State’s Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area. The results of the analysis of data collected from these schools, on the other hand, will be taken as a time representation and reflection of the current condition in all primary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area in particular and Edo State in general.
