THE IMPACT OF PARENTS’ EDUCATION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THEIR CHILDREN
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this project was to investigate the influence of parental background on the academic performance of children in selected schools in Kaduna south LGA, Kaduna state. Five research objectives, five research questions, and five research hypotheses were developed to guide the study. The Ex-post Facto design was used for this study.
The study’s population consists of all primary school students from the fifty three primary schools in the three local government areas of Kaduna South L.G.A. The zone’s fifty-three primary schools have a total enrollment of 7,945 primary students. Twelve of the fifty-three schools were sampled using the proportionate random sampling technique.
All PRI 5 students in the twelve schools, a total of 816 (816) were used as the subject of the study. The questionnaire on parental background influence (FBI) was designed by the researcher and validated by experts. The instrument’s dependability was determined using the Crunbach alpha method.
The collected data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation, and the hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics at the 0.05 level of significance. The instrument was pilot tested with 30 students in Kaduna North Education Zone. The coefficient of reliability was 0.69. The study’s findings revealed that:
Pupils from educated parents outperform those from uneducated parents in academics; pupils from high-income status parents outperform pupils from low-income status parents in academic performance because their parents were able to afford necessary materials and equipment for effective learning in school;
parental level of motivation also influenced pupils’ academic performance because motivati Based on these findings, the study recommended, among other things, that parents diversify their sources of income in order to fund their children’s education. Parents must also recognize the significance of using rewards and other methods to motivate their children.
