CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Today’s secondary schools offer subjects such as chemistry, physics, English language, mathematics, economics, commerce, fine art, history, government, geography, home economics, and so on. If we try to categorize these subjects above into broader categories, we will undoubtedly discover that they fall under science, social sciences, and pure arts.
These subjects listed above are very important for our day-to-day exercise, and they are designed to relate them to life experiences in order to achieve success; therefore, both sides must be very active; in other words, teachers must be dedicated to effective teaching, and students must strictly adhere to the rules governing hard work in order to succeed in their academic career in life. As a result, poor student performance is a serious issue that requires immediate attention.
Education is critical to human survival because society and education are inextricably linked and interdependent. This can also be seen in the characteristics and development of a child born in a particular society. The school serves as a governing body for children from various parental and social backgrounds, and as such, the children’s learning and rate of academic development are closely related to other experiences.
The environment in which the child finds himself or herself determines the child’s performance in school. The socioeconomic factors include social, economic, psychological, cultural, genetic, environmental, and emotional factors.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
Education has been defined as a continuous process that begins at birth and ends at death. Parents, teachers, educators, and researchers are aware of factors that can influence or hinder a child’s academic performance. The impact of education on a child’s life can be positive or negative, and both can be emphasized by listing the importance of education.
A person’s potential can be determined by both formal educations he sets or receives. According to research, when a child is born, he is a tabular raser, but according to other researchers, a child does not take into school bank. He or she enters school with knowledge of what his or her home has to offer. It is therefore important to understand that the research work is intended to investigate and analyze The impact of parents’ occupational status on students’ academic performance at senior school certificate examination (SSCE) in some selected secondary schools in Benin City. This study aims to determine the differences in educational performance between children whose parents are academically, socially, and economically balanced and those whose parents are not academically, socially, or economically balanced.
STUDY PURPOSE
The goal of this project is to discover or demonstrate the impact of socioeconomic factors on children’s academic performance. It is based on secondary schools from Benin City. The research work will demonstrate, among other things, suggested or proposed solutions to some of these problems that impede student performance in school.
This research will help future students who want to conduct research on the same topic. As a result, the purpose of this project is to investigate whether the following factors may have an impact on the child’s academic performance.
1. Economic educational backgrounds
2. The socioeconomic status (SES) of the parents
QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
Based on the assumptions stated above, the following hypotheses have been developed.
a. There is no significant relationship between school facilities and his academic performance in school.
b. There is a link between structure and student academic performance.
c. Parental academic fulfillment has no effect on the child’s academic performance at school.
d. Academic performance is bound to be affected depending on how well a child performs.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
It has been claimed that a child’s school performance is heavily influenced by his or her socioeconomic status, as social life is the primary source of letting. As a result, this work will demonstrate the significance of socioeconomic differences in a child’s academic performance in school. This research will aid curriculum planners in the development of school curricula. It will assist them in recognizing the unique characteristics of individuals or parents.
Aside from the benefits of curriculum planners, teachers should ensure that a classroom learning situation is entered for various categories as well as well adjusted pupils or students. It also contributes to the development of a new method of teaching conclusively, regardless of parents’ socioeconomic status (SES), parents should strive to encourage their wards at home and provide them with all amenities that improve academic performance.
STUDY OBJECTIVES
This study limits the researcher to only one of the reasons or factors influencing students’ educational performance at the senior school certificate examination (SSCE) in some selected secondary schools in Benin City. Itohan Girls, Emotan, Imaguero Secondary School, and Idia College will be visited by the researcher. These are the sample schools that represent the entire population. In these schools, senior secondary I (SS I) students will represent the entire student population.
TERMS DEFINITION
Social Class: A social class is a level or class in society. Individuals at this level see income and occupation, value, and some attitude toward social issues.
Economic Background: This relates to wealth; whether the family is wealthy or impoverished. If they have factors such as land, houses, cars, or none at all.
Higher Education: This refers to the educational qualification, such as NCE, Bed, Med, and so on.
Lower Education: This refers to education that begins with the students’ educational lives, such as primary school, SSCE, and so on.
Stimulating Homes: These are situations in which parents keep their children mentally alert by involving them in brain tasking activities and providing them with learning requirements.
