CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

The role of parents is to pass on knowledge from one generation to the next. At the most basic level, parents are more effective in instilling discipline and knowledge in their children.

As a result, it is a well-known fact that all parents have a natural desire to provide their children with the good things in life that they are capable of providing for them. And, in the modern era, the primary task is to provide a high-quality education and a comfortable standard of living. As a result of this, parents have developed a strong interest in what happens at school.

This parental interest in the education of their children and wards in schools gave birth to the organization or formation known as the “Parents Teachers Association.” The Parents Teacher Association was founded in America in the late nineteenth century by a group of women. The first meeting, dubbed “the national congress of mothers,” took place in 1877. This meeting sparked the formation of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers in Association in 2000.

The congress of parents and teachers, now known as the Parents Teacher Association PTA, and its functions have expanded to include curricular development policy making and setting standards in schools.

This means that the Parents Teachers Association is interested in the school system’s cooperation.

If the school is to achieve its goals, meet the needs of students, and meet the expectations of parents, there must be a strong connection between teachers and parents. Parents are experienced individuals who understand child psychology and development.

As a result, they are aware of their children’s needs at various stages of development. As a result, parents are in a better position to provide useful advice to teachers when necessary. Individual parents could be invited to the school to discuss their children’s well-being. The principal, with the help of the staff, identifies the children’s weaknesses and makes suggestions for improvement.

The Parents Teacher Association is a forum for teachers and parents to meet and discuss issues concerning the parents’ and teachers’ welfare. Parents could be educated or enlightened on the discipline and causes of student delinquency at the PTA meeting.

The parents will gain an understanding of the causes of their child’s problems and learn more effective ways to deal with them as a result of this. He will also be aware of the dangers of ineffective discipline. PTA organization in most schools raises a number of concerns.

a. Does the PTA provide funds for the school?

b. Is it possible for the school to raise funds without the PTA?

c. How much has the PTA contributed to student discipline at school?

In reality, the PTA raises funds for the school through levy or donation.

Second, without the PTA, the school cannot raise the levy. This is due to the fact that the PTA represents the community in which the school is built.

Finally, PTA has influenced student discipline in schools.

SUMMARY OF THE PROBLEM

Many factors contribute to the formation of a parent-teacher association in secondary schools in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area. There are most likely insufficient school facilities. It could be due to a lack of manpower, which could necessitate PTA negotiations. It could be due to students’ interest. Again, this could be due to insufficient provision of school materials for students.

All of these issues compel the PTA’s involvement. It is likely whether the PTA actually acts to assist the school in matters pertaining to the day-to-day operation of the school. As a result, a formal study of the influence of PTA in school administration is critical.

 

STUDY PURPOSE

The goal of this research is to determine the role of parent teacher associations in school administration, particularly in the Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The PTA’s involvement in secondary school administration is a type of service to the government, which always emphasizes self-help development, and this organization helps to promote discipline among students through policy formation. As a result, the goal of this research is to determine the role of PTA in school administration.

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

To guide the study, the following research questions have been developed.

a. Does the involvement of the PTA in secondary school administration affect school discipline?

b. Is indiscipline in secondary schools primarily the result of a lack of cooperation between parents and school authorities?

c. Does the PTA’s fund-raising contribute to the students’ well-being?

d. Are schools with a strong PTA less likely to riot than schools without a PTA?

e. Does the PTA offer moral support to students at school?

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The role of the parent-teacher association in secondary school administration is critical. People frequently attribute most secondary school administration’s success to the presence of a strong PTA organization in schools.

This study is significant in that it will shed more light on how students, teachers, principals, and the general public perceived the influence of PTA in secondary school administration machinery. Again, as a result of its contributions, principals may recognize their deficiencies and become involved in a more effective approach to school administration.

The study’s findings may provide reliable information on the nature of principal leadership in schools to state and local school boards of education. As a result, they may redefine the policy on which future school administration policies will be based.

As a result, effective teaching, learning, and administration in our secondary schools would improve. Other researchers, particularly those working in the fields of school administration and discipline, may find the study’s influence useful.

TERMS DEFINITION

The researcher will provide a brief definition and explanation of the concept used in this study.

A school is defined as a formal structure for teaching and learning. That is, everything associated with a school, such as a chalkboard, a writing desk and chairs, qualified teachers, and so on, must be present.

PTA: Parents Teachers Association, as the name implies, is a union or gathering of both parents, guidance, and teachers, as well as pupils and students attending primary and secondary schools of learning.

Administration is a social process concerned with identifying, maintaining, motivating, controlling, and uniting formally and informally organized human and material resources through an integrated system designed specifically to achieve a goal. However, in the educational context, educational administration is a service activity that allows the fundamental goals of the educational process to be realized more fully and efficiently.

Administration is the act of running and controlling the school system; the administration book records the day-to-day activities of the school.

Discipline: This is the process by which children are taught orderliness, good behavior, and the habit of getting the most out of themselves, all of which are essential to the school’s well-being. Indiscipline, on the other hand, is the polar opposite of discipline and simply relinquishes control.
