THE IMPACT OF UNEMPLOYMENT ON YOUTH

ABSTRACT

The problem of youth unemployment in Nigeria is growing at an unprecedented rate. Unemployment occurs when able-bodied males who are willing to work are unable to find adequate jobs.

Unemployment has been discovered to affect both skilled and unskilled individuals in Nigeria. More specifically, it affects the youth, who are at the heart of the nation’s economic development. However, some schools of thought believe that some people are naturally unwilling to accept any form of employment offer, and others believe that some adolescents are simply lazy and prefer leisure to hard work.

The nature of the unemployment crisis has prompted this study, as it affects youngsters in Lagos state’s Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area.

During the course of this study, the researcher distributed a questionnaire to the participants, who responded in a variety of ways. As evidenced by their submission, unemployment arose in Nigeria as a result of poor management of the nation’s resources. 85% of respondents agreed that the Nigerian government’s economic strategy should be restructured so that the educational system in Nigeria focuses on technological skills to enable.

To combat unemployment, social facilities in rural regions should be provided in order to minimise rural-urban migration to the bare minimum or optimal level. However, eradicating young unemployment in Nigeria is considered as the sole solution to the problem of moral laxity among Nigerian youths who roam the country’s cities.

Political logjerm is also considered as a hindrance to unemployment; hence, effective governance based on the principles of democracy, fairness, and equality will help to solve the unemployment problems of Nigerian youngsters with the goal of promoting and constructing an egalitarian society.

CHAPITRE ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

According to Begg (1987:570), the unemployment rate is the percentage of the labour force that is unemployed yet recorded as willing and available for work.

Similarly, unemployment is a state in which a person wishes to work but is unable to find work.

However, unemployment might be viewed as a structural problem in which the economy’s productive capacity is considerably below the level of absorbing available labour. Because the term “unemployment” can be interpreted in a variety of ways, it can also refer to groups of people who are physically capable and often ready to work but cannot find suitable employment.

Unemployment is a persistent issue that may be found throughout the country, states, and localities. Different people get caught in the web of unemployment; it is a common problem among higher institution graduates and secondary school dropouts. It also includes both skilled and unskilled employees, including scientific, engineering, and medical graduates, among others.

The peculiarity of our society’s high rate of unemployment has prompted the need to investigate how unemployment problems affect the youths in Lagos state’s Agbado Oke Odo local government area, and to seek possible solutions to this enormous and lingering problem that threatens the core of our life stream. This is because unemployment has an impact on a country’s economic growth, social stability, and political stability.

Furthermore, some schools of thinking regard unemployment as a stepping stone to a better job.

As a result of the foregoing, it has become necessary to embark on this research, as it has been observed that if the problems of unemployment are not addressed, you will be loitering around in Nigeria society, engaging in numerous evil activities or constituting a social menace in the society.

Economists have examined the topic of unemployment, its causes and effects, and proposed solutions to improve the level of development of nations around the world.

In Nigeria today, youth unemployment is a major issue as a result of numerous economic measures or policies implemented by the federal government of Nigeria. Such policies include employment embargoes, currency depreciation, and the development of a foreign exchange market, all of which are considered as ineffectively executed by the relevant agencies.

Because of Nigeria’s social and political instability, youth unemployment is at an all-time high. It has been stated that kids are the nation’s future leaders, and they are the major important components of production in the country.

As a result, in order for any production process to be determined and realised, labour must be completely utilised. Our life stream is automatically rendered land and capital in the absence of labour.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem of youth unemployment has resulted in the following developments in Nigerian society.

3. As a result of the high percentage of youth unemployment, there has been a large degree of moral laxity and social evil deeds associated with unemployment, and this misbehaviour has discouraged investors from positively boosting the economy.

4. The high rate of unemployment in the country has caused many of our prospective labours to go to other countries in quest of work, thereby contributing to foreign land revenue at the expense of ours.

5. As a result of the country’s unemployment, many of our adolescents have become hoodlums, becoming a nuisance in society by extorting money from commercial vehicle drivers.

The study’s findings and recommendations are expected to be extremely beneficial to both the government, policymakers, industrialists, and youth. It is believed that this study will provide useful information on how the problems of youth unemployment might be minimised or, better yet, eradicated, thereby promoting a completely free environment from harmful activities.

1.6 MIETHODOLOGY AND DATA COLLECTION SOURCE.

The following is a description of the method that will be used to collect the essential and accurate information, as well as the source of data collection:

1. A primary data source is a system for obtaining information or data from a raw source. Specifically, from the first occurrence. For example, questionnaires, interviews, self-participation, and so forth.

2. Secondary data source, which comprises a data sourcing process at libraries, secretariats, banks, and so on.

Data would also be gathered via newspapers, libraries, magazines, handbills, journals, questionnaires, and other forms of general media.

1.7 SCOPE/LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study’s scope is limited to the Nigerian scenario, with the main focus on Ajeroi lfelodun local government area in Lagos.

Because of the vast population of residents in this area, the study is limited to this area.

Furthermore, due to time and funding constraints, the research will be restricted to the previously designated area. However, the researcher is not concerned with any other present scenario.

The information and conclusions gained from the scope of this area can be utilised as a foundation for the country’s economic effects of youth unemployment.
