INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background Of The Study
Economics is a social science that analyses how individuals, governments, businesses, and nations allocate scarce resources to meet their infinite demands. Economics is concerned with human behaviour, such as how people earn a living and choose between options to satisfy their desires. Because economics is concerned with human behaviour, it concentrates on the study of enterprises and governments whose actions are aimed towards the provision of commodities and services for the satisfaction of human wants.
So economics is a social science, and the reasoning approach in economics, like any other science subject, is methodological, its analysis is systematic, and the validity of its many ideas is established. Economic education is critical to the long-term viability of our country’s economy.
It provides our pupils with the foundation for a prosperous financial future. It empowers students by providing them with the knowledge and resources they need to improve their well-being. Economists recognise that gaining fundamental economic and financial knowledge is a critical goal for a democratic society that relies significantly on informed citizens and personal economic decision-making.
When households can accumulate wealth, they can also create more economically stable neighbourhoods and communities.The study of Economics is essential throughout our life. Economic challenges are capturing the attention of every individual today, whether directly or indirectly.
As a result, it is reasonable to include Economics as a unique subject of study in the school learning system, especially since it will be a terminal stage for the majority of pupils. At the same time, it falls within the framework of education, which advocates for education to be relevant to the needs of students. In compared to other social science subjects, economics has an advantage in providing specific job options to learners and opening the doors to many occupations if they pursue the study of the subject further.
Another reason why Economics education is important is that our economy is changing due to factors such as privatisation, liberalisation, and external pressures such as globalisation. This offers a strong case for providing economic education to all children so that they can understand these new economic concepts and challenges. Furthermore, understanding Economics prepares students to engage successfully in economic and social concerns, as well as make informed decisions in everyday life.
At the same time, the democratic system that we have established will only flourish if we win the economic race. There is no education more crucial in the interests of our individual survival and the survival of the nation than that which allows us to grasp and think on our economic difficulties. From all of these perspectives, Economics teaching and learning has become compelling and vital in modern times.
Economics at the secondary school level has been developed in a unique way that is often not present in the formal education system at this level. The overall goal of structuring the units in the current format is to make Economics instruction more helpful, closer to the learner’s surroundings, and to foster economic literacy.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Economic education is critical to the long-term viability of our country’s economy. It provides our pupils with the foundation for a prosperous financial future. It empowers consumers by providing them with the knowledge and resources they need to improve their financial situation. It is the most effective investment we can make to enhance our country’s economy. According to this viewpoint, the researcher wishes to investigate the significance of learning economics in secondary schools.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The basic goal of the study is to emphasise the importance of studying economics in secondary schools, while the specific goals of this study are as follows:
1. Determine the significance of economics education in secondary schools.
2. To provide pupils with a grasp of the nation’s physical and people resources, as well as their potential for economic development.
3. Determine whether Economics should be made mandatory for all secondary school science students.
4. Determine whether students have favourable attitudes towards Economics.
1.4 HYPOTHESES FOR RESEARCH
The researcher developed the following research hypotheses in order to successfully complete the study:
H0: There is no need for secondary school students to study economics.
H1: Secondary school students should study economics.
H02: Economics should not be made mandatory for all secondary school science students.
H2: Economics should be made mandatory for all secondary school science students.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE THE STUDY
The outcomes of the study are expected to benefit the Ministry of Education once it is completed. The study will inform students and the wider public on the importance of studying economics. The study will also be very useful to academics who plan to conduct research on similar themes because it will act as a guide. Finally, the research will be very useful to academics, lecturers, teachers, students, and the general public.
1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The study’s scope includes the significance of studying economics in secondary schools. The researcher comes upon a constraint that limits the scope of the investigation;
a) RESEARCH MATERIAL AVAILABILITY: The researcher’s research material is insufficient, restricting the scope of the investigation.
b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and examinations with the study.
c) Organisational privacy: Limited access to the selected auditing firm makes obtaining all necessary and required information about the operations challenging.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
STUDYING: The attempt to acquire knowledge, such as by reading, observation, or research: The study of language has dispelled many myths. b. An act or effort done to gain knowledge: devoted himself to his studies. c. A field of study or department of learning: geography; graduate studies.
ECONOMIC: Economics is the study of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.
SECONDARY SCHOOL: Secondary school is the next level of education after primary school. In the United States, secondary schools are frequently referred to as high schools. Secondary schools in the United Kingdom might be public, grammar, or comprehensive.
1.8 THE STUDY’S ORGANISATION
This research paper is divided into five chapters for easy comprehension.
The first chapter is concerned with the introduction, which includes the (overview of the study), historical background, problem statement, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms, and historical background of the study. The second chapter emphasises the theoretical framework on which the study is based, as well as a survey of related literature. The third chapter discusses the study’s research strategy and methodology. The fourth chapter focuses on data gathering, analysis, and presenting of findings. The study’s summary, conclusion, and suggestions are presented in Chapter 5.
