THE INFLUENCE OF LEADERSHIP STYLES OF PRINCIPAL OFFICERS IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION ON LECTURERS EFFECTIVENESS
ABSTRACT
The primary goal of this study was to look into the impact of a principal’s leadership style on school outcomes. This research looked at the indirect relationship between leadership style and school environment. Another goal was to look into the effect of culture on leadership style as it relates to the school environment and outcomes.
In this empirical study, data from the TIMSS 1995 on Kuwait and the United States were used. In the statistical analysis, descriptive statistics and an ANOVA were used.
This study yielded several conclusions. The data analysis supported the hypothesis that the leadership style of the principal was related to school outcomes. This relationship is discovered to be both direct and indirect via the school environment.
The integrative principal leadership style has been found to encourage and create a cooperative school environment in schools in the United States, resulting in better school outcomes than schools with authoritative principals.
The principal’s leadership style in Kuwait and the United States was discovered to be very different. Principals in Kuwaiti schools tend to be authoritative in their leadership style, whereas their counterparts in the United States tend to be integrative.
Surprisingly, despite the fact that Kuwaiti school principals are authoritative in nature, data showed that a cooperative school environment resulted in higher school outcomes. This implies that the American model is inapplicable in a culture like Kuwait. According to the findings of this study, there are no universal or appropriate leadership styles for all cultures.
INTRODUCTION
Problem Statement
Does the leadership style of a school’s administration affect the outcome of the school and the students’ achievements? This study specifically investigates the principal’s leadership style and its impact on shaping the schools’ learning environments and, as a result, the schools’ outcomes.
Furthermore, another dimension is added to the previously investigated relationship in terms of each nation’s culture, which may influence school leadership style. In this study, two different cultures were chosen: Kuwait (a religious, conservative Middle Eastern society) and the United States (a modern, secular, liberal, Western society).
Kuwait and the United States were chosen for this study due to the growing trend in the Kuwaiti education system of adopting US educational models, particularly in private schools. Furthermore, despite its challenges, the educational model in the United States is regarded as a global role model from which other countries can learn.
Research Issues
The above-mentioned general problem statement prompted the following specific research questions:
1. What types of school environments are created by principals’ various leadership styles?
2. Is there a significant link between the principal’s leadership style and school outcomes?
3. Do cultural traits influence the principal’s leadership style, and thus the learning environments and outcomes at the school? If so, how so?
