THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
The researcher intended to examine and investigate the impact of socioeconomic status on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in this study. For the current study, the investigator used a descriptive survey research method to select 170 Senior Secondary School students as a sample population from four Secondary schools using the Simple Random Sampling Technique.
The Socio-economic Status Scale (SESS) developed by Kalia and Sahu (2012) was used to collect data on students’ Socio-economic Status, and previous annual marks considered as Academic Achievement of the students were collected from the office record book.
Using IBM SPSS 20.0, the researcher analyzed the data using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient and the t-test as statistical techniques. The study’s findings revealed a positive relationship between socioeconomic status and
academic achievement of senior secondary school students, as well as a significant difference in academic achievement between different SES groups. It was also discovered that there is no significant difference in academic achievement between male and female students.
