This study examines the impact of western fashion on Nigerian college students. It specifically addresses its effect on university students in Nigeria. The research hypothesises that the current trends in student behavior in Nigeria are significantly related to their exposure to and perception of western fashion.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE EXPERIMENT

This study investigates the impact of Western fashion on students. Fashion has been defined differently by various individuals. The various definitions of fashion are influenced by the diverse perspectives of individuals.

According to Wikipedia (2013), fashion is an umbrella term for a popular style or practice, particularly in apparel, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, and furniture. Fashion refers to a distinct and frequently habitual trend in a person’s attire style, as well as to prevalent styles of behavior.

Fashion also refers to the most recent textile designers’ creations. The more technical term, costume, has become so intertwined with the term “fashion” that its use has been relegated to special contexts such as fancy dress or masquerade attire, whereas “fashion” refers to apparel in general and the study of it. Although there are feminine and masculine aspects to fashion, some trends are androgynous.

According to Obiora (2002), the evolution of fashion is gradual and not abrupt. He (2002) argues that fashion is an ever-changing process. It alters in precisely the same manner as humans. From generation to generation, it is dynamic, learned, acquired, transmitted, or diffused through contact or means of communication.

It is observed that traditional Nigerian fashion is diminishing as a result of the assimilation and adaptation of Western fashion. Lerner provides one of these hypotheses relating to this subtle method of attacking international communication. (1956).

Lerner asserts in his concept of “empathy” that the inhabitants of third-world countries must learn to empathize with the West in order for the modern transformation of their societies to be possible. Schramm (1964) developed an intriguing model in which he compares the degree of social development of communication to that of different nations.

Individualism is required to gain access to these western fashions. In response to these findings, Nigeria and other third world nations have redirected a substantial portion of their foreign exchange earnings to fashion.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

According to reports, the influence of western fashion on Nigerian students is a significant problem for Nigerians. Among these issues are:

Inadequate policy to protect pupils from improper dress.

There is a deterioration of cultural values.

The reproduction of Western fashion.

The Nigerian pupils are subjected to brainwashing.

Consequently, if the aforementioned issues are not addressed, the Nigerian fashion industry will be completely destroyed.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH

The researcher’s objective is to conduct an in-depth study on the impact of Western fashion on students in order to ascertain its implications for Nigerian cultural values. These objectives consist of:

To demonstrate the impact of Western fashion on Nigerian students.

To investigate its ubiquitous influence on the values of Nigerian students.

Determine whether western fashion should be encouraged or discouraged among Nigerian students.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EVALUATION

1. The research will aid in the possible dilution, dominance, and eventual assimilation of the African/Nigerian fashion, which has until now been characterized by neighborliness, reverence for elders, virtue, community orientation, and collectivism.

2. It will allow the government and policymakers to implement adequate measures to restrict the importation of Western fashion into Nigeria.

It will eliminate the notion that Nigerians should imitate Western fashion or practices.

This research will allow the government to determine the impact of western fashion on the psychological development of Nigerian students.

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The research questions are structured inquiries intended to be posed by the researcher and answered by a respondent. For a researcher to accomplish her objective, the following question must be posed.

Do Nigerian students expose themselves to western fashion more frequently?

Do students favor Western fashion over conventional fashion?

Are Nigerian students more likely to identify with traditional or western fashion?

1.6 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

Nigerian students are increasingly exposed to western fashion.

Nigerian students are not increasingly exposed to western fashion.

Students favor Western fashion over conventional attire

Students do not favor Western fashion over conventional attire.

Students in Nigeria do not identify more western fashion.

1.7 RADIUS OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the impact of Western fashion on students in Nigeria. In the interest of the investigation, both staff members and students of a number of selected institutions were interviewed orally.

However, the research depends more on the completed and returned questionnaires distributed to students and faculty. The researcher also consulted a number of relevant textbooks, newspapers, and academic journals for information.
