THE MANAGEMENT OF THE NIGER DELTA CRISIS
Abstract
Various countries around the world have used a participatory conflict management approach to resolve resource, political, or cultural values conflicts, which allows for the addressing of emerging needs that led to the conflict.
The Niger Delta Conflict has its own history and causes dating back before Nigeria’s independence in 1960, but the argument cannot be separated from the failure of the government to fulfill its mandate, which has contributed to the conflict’s escalation for a long time.
The paper reviewed various relevant works on the subject matter in order to give the work a focus line for investigation and problem solving. The paper’s major findings are that people in the Niger Delta Region lack some basic necessities for a good life,
while elite groups, both from traditional institutions and political office holders, are heavily involved in massive corruption in which money meant for regional development is diverted to personal accounts for the benefit of individuals rather than the public interest in the area.
The paper suggests that, in order to address the issue of conflict in the Niger Delta, institutions at the federal, state, and local levels of government, community leaders, and members of civil society groups must stay awake for their responsibility of providing basic needs for their peoples by using scientific administrative approach indices of identifying needs and finding appropriate means of addressing those demands, and finally, government at all levels must operate.
