This thesis examines the necessity of using a coursebook in teaching English as a second language for young learners in primary education. In the introduction I intend to explain my personal reasons for choosing this theme. In the second part my main aim is to demonstrate different opinions for and against using coursebooks. Although the perfect textbook does not exist yet, we need and have several good textbooks. So English language teachers have a great challenge to find the most suitable coursebook and some supplementary materials for their pupils and for their own needs. In my thesis I try to analyse the coursebook, Project 1. This is the book that I consider one of the best to use for children in primary education. The main goal of the thesis is to find out the students’ attitudes towards the book we use at our school. In the research part teachers also share their opinion about the necessity of using a book.
