THE NIGER DELTA CRISIS, AND ITS IMPACT ON THE NATIONAL SECURITY OF NIGERIA

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 IBACKROUND OF THE STUDY

An international observation declared the Niger Delta to be one of the world’s most volatile locations in 2002. This assessment came on the heels of the region’s long-running crisis, which took on alarming proportions in the waning years of the 1990s and the first years of the new century.

From one decade to the next, the region has experienced extraordinary crises centred on political and, most significantly, economic concerns. Also, the nature and dynamics of the crisis in the region have evolved from decade to decade,

and the transformations that the crisis underwent from one time to the next have opened the way for its institutionalisation in the history of the region and Nigeria in general.

1 If the historical institutionalisation of the Niger Delta crisis in the country’s politics and economy is something to debate, the threat it has posed and continues to pose to the domestic and international security of the Nigerian nation state is something that requires critical academic inquiry.

My objective in doing a systematic examination of the situation is to uncover the shifting dynamics of what defines national security over time and how the nation state of Nigeria has dealt with the threat that the Niger Delta crisis poses to so-called national security.

National security issues are a collection of political, legal, social, economic, ideological, and military issues that arise during a people’s struggle for political and economic independence, as well as the establishment of equal and friendly relations with other people in bilateral and international affairs.

It is critical to examine how regional crises affect the survival of the entire country, as well as how the political entity known as Nigeria has dealt with the shifting dynamics of the crisis. The current study thus recognises that the concept of national security is fluid and dynamic.

All nations around the world are dealing with, and will continue to deal with, national security concerns. The intricate nature of the Niger Delta problem poses a major and long-term threat to Nigeria’s weak democracy and precarious national security.

This paper investigates the complexities involved in maintaining national security as a result of the Niger Delta conflict. The idea of National Security issues and the contributions of the Niger Delta crisis are both worldwide and domestic in nature for the purposes of this research.

1.2 A STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

In this paper, I aim to address all aspects of the role of crude oil in the escalation and resolution of the Niger Delta issue. What is the relevance of the crisis’s other demands or factors? The Multinational Corporation’s contributions and various political ferments in the region?

The Niger Delta crisis cannot be understood without a critical understanding of the relationship between individual communities on the one hand and the federal government on the other, which revolves around resource control and slowed regional infrastructural, economic, and social development.

To what extent does the crisis pose a threat to national security? To put it another way, what is the crisis’s threat to Nigeria’s fledgling democracy? The transformation of crises into the all-encompassing idea of national security is also examined, as are the federal government’s efforts to maintain legitimacy in the name of essential national security.

The Niger Delta conflict has repeatedly jeopardised the government’s paramount role in terms of the security of lives and property, as well as the maintenance of Nigeria’s unity as a single political entity.

2 National security extends beyond the government’s core function in the protection of lives and property. It also has implications for international security and sovereignty. The vexing question is whether the Niger Delta situation poses a threat to Nigeria’s international security and sovereignty.

1.3 AIM OF THE STUDY

The role of the Niger Delta crisis in national security issues is a topic that deserves scholarly attention.

As a result, the goals of this study are

1. Examine the impact of the Niger Delta conflict on Nigerian national security.

2. To situate the Niger Delta issue within the context of its implications for national security.

3. To examine how regional crises affect the overall survival of the country.

4. To identify the changing dynamics and what constitutes national security over time, as well as how Nigeria’s nation state has dealt with the situation.

5. The role of crude oil in the escalation and resolution of the Niger Delta crisis.

6. The relevance of the crisis’s other demands or elements.

7. The contribution of multinational corporations and various political ferments in the regions.

1.4 EVIDENCE

The justification for this work is best understood from two major perspectives: the need to conduct a critical academic analysis of the origins of the Nigeria Delta Crisis and an assessment of the impact of the Niger Delta Crisis on national security

, as a result of the crisis’s changing dynamics and the high degree of internationalisation it has undergone in recent years. The internationalisation of the Niger Delta problem is as ancient as the problem itself; nevertheless, in recent years, the international community’s attention has grown.
