ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research was to gauge student sentiment on the proposed Office Technology and Management admissions requirement of math credit. With this study’s overarching goal in mind, researchers set out to gauge students’ preexisting opinions on the subject of office technology and management. Tables and percentages were used for the analysis of a series of questions. Fifty students were chosen at random to participate in the study, and the researchers reviewed the relevant literature. Lastly, it was suggested that both the parties and the teachers should work on instilling a good attitude towards education in their children and reevaluate their teaching methods. research project pertaining to office technology and management.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1 1.1 Background of the Study

Education in Nigeria can trace its origins back to the early 18th century, when the first missionaries arrived in the country. At first, we aimed to educate “Heathen” about Christianity by teaching him the Bible and giving him the skills to speak verbally and in writing. Because of this, the missionaries saw that it was crucial to prepare local educators to work for profit and public agencies.

Manager’s employment history begins in 2001, as stated by Ibanga (2004). Two thousand years before Christopher Shores invented the typewriter, Marcus Tillius popularised the twin course, shorthand in the Roman Empire. Because it allowed the writer to capture words as they were said, it was thought to have worked as a catalyst that accelerated the expansion of the Roman Empire.

The Roman Empire quickly saw the system’s merit and began teaching it to youngsters of all social strata. More credits are required for certification in the secretarial studies program, but, because the Nigerian education industry recognised the need to broaden students’ prospects, more credits are being demanded in that area.

Managers have the power to make adjustments that will help students take mathematics more seriously, according to Olori (2006). Lori (2006) asserts that this program will provide students with the necessary information and abilities. Students will be able to earn credits in English, Economics, Government, Commerce, and Mathematics.

Consequently, the goal of providing this unit should be to encourage students, particularly those with a background in polytechnic management, to embrace the idea of maths credit; The first Nigerian university to launch a program to train managers of the highest calibre was Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

By offering a Bachelor of Science (BSC) degree program in modern office technology and administration, it aims to help students improve their mathematics grades. For the purpose of generating first-rate secretaries, this aids the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA).

Computers, typewriters, and electronic/electric machines are only a few examples of the developments that have taken it from its rudimentary standard to a more advanced one. Due to the extensive business training in polytechnics and universities, it is now much easier to incorporate the hobbies and interests of ND, HND, and BSC graduates into the administration and managerial spheres, thus eliminating the need to restrict shorthand typists once they reach the top of their secretarial careers.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

The school’s information and communication technology (ICT) department recently decided that the managers’ studies program would benefit from adding math credit to its curriculum.

They aid in preparing students for careers in business and office administration by introducing them to mathematical concepts in a structured way. Some educated Nigerians view this change as a positive development that will elevate managers’ professional standing, while others worry that it will cause students to struggle academically and engage in exam cheating, which will reduce enrolment.

Finding out how students feel about maths being a required course component in office technology and management is the main goal of this research. In particular, it seeks to ascertain, from a sense of interest, likes, and dislikes, whether the students have a favourable or unfavourable impression of mathematics credit.

1.3 Purpose Of The Study

This study focused on Finding out how students feel about maths being a required course in office technology and management was the driving force for this research.

In particular, this research aimed to determine how challenging students view mathematics as a subject. In order to find out how much of an impact pupils’ lack of mathematical knowledge has on their grades. Ascertain the degree to which the lecturers’ pedagogical approach impacts students’ academic outcomes. Assess the impact on students’ perceptions of insufficient classroom facilities.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. When it comes to math credit, how should students of office technology and management think?

2. Does a student’s performance suffer because of their lack of mathematical background? How does the student’s impression of          math credit affect their performance?

3. How do different professors and pedagogical approaches influence students’ final grades?

1.5 The Significance of the Study

The results of this study should assist the councillor in being held accountable for the service he provides to the kids in the area and provide the students with the information they need once the research is finished. The children’ maths scores have been consistently low. The results of this study will be useful in addressing the issues.

1.6 Scope of the Study

The Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, Imo state, Department of Office Technology and Management is the primary focus of the research. Thus, if the study was constrained by the resources available at the time, including money, time, and materials, its conclusions will be applicable to bathes institutions.
