THE PTA’S ROLE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1. THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Efficient and effective school administration should be entirely internal or limited to the school administration. For a school to succeed in all aspects, useful input from ‘external’ sources must be carefully considered and implemented. The Parents’ Teachers Association is one of those helpful outside resources.
Parents’ teacher’s association is an organization composed of parents/guardians of students or pupils and school administration, primarily teachers, who meet annually or quarterly to discuss issues concerning the educational, moral, and spiritual well-being of students or pupils in any learning organization, whether at the nursery, primary, or secondary level. This organization is divided into two parts: the executive and the general assembly.
The general assembly meets at predetermined intervals, either quarterly or yearly, while the executives meet as needed. The executive arm of this association is made up of duly elected parents or guardians, as well as school administration such as head teachers, principals, and school administrators (kalu 2009).
The PTA has evolved into an organization that monitors the school’s progress. All hands must be on deck to ensure the efficient administration of any organization, schools included.
Much has been written about the operations and functions of the parents’ teachers association over the years. This organization has clearly defined roles for each school, from nursery and primary school to secondary school. In some schools, they are primarily regarded as a fund-raising organization, whereas in others, they are regarded as one of the school’s highest decision-making bodies. Whichever way one looks at it, this association may be a major stakeholder in the school’s effective administration.

To represent the views of the school’s parents/guardians
To promote a positive image of parents by working effectively with the Parent Representatives on the Board of Management.
If necessary, to notify parents of current changes in the school system.
Participation in the National Parents Council allows you to network with other Parent Associations.
To create a forum for parents and teachers to share information and research about children’s education and welfare.
To propose solutions for better school administration.
To assist parents, teachers, and students in ensuring that all children are treated in accordance with the school’s ethos.
To assist and collaborate with the teaching staff in delivering the school curriculum.
In consultation with the Principal and the Board of Management, to assist in raising funds for the school and the Parents Association.
To keep parents up to date on school-related activities.
To have an impact on policy development at the school level
Once affiliated with the National Parents Council, you will be able to influence policy development at the national level.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The educational performance of Nigerian students and the standard of education in Nigeria are gradually deteriorating, raising the question of the role of the parents’ teachers association in school administration in Nigeria in addressing this malady in the educational sector.
There is also growing concern about students’ poor performance in the recently released WASSCE examinations, prompting this study to investigate the role of this association in improving this decline.
Does the Parents’ Teachers Association help to improve school administration in Nigeria? Is their participation as stakeholders required to improve the ailing education sector? These are the issues that prompted this survey.
1.3. THE STUDY’S GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The study’s main goal is to investigate the role of parent-teacher associations in school administration in Nigeria. The following are the study’s specific objectives:
1. Determine whether the association has an impact on the performance of the school’s teaching staff.
2. Determine whether the association has an impact on the academic performance of their wards or children.
3. Determine whether the association has an impact on school policy development.
4. Determine whether or not there is a link between the activities of the parents’ teachers association and the advancement of education in Nigeria.
1.4. QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
The following questions were posed in order to investigate the impact of the Parents’ Teachers Association in Nigerian schools.
1. To what extent does the parent-teacher association influence the overall performance of school teachers?
2. Does the Parents’ Teachers Association have an impact on their wards’ or children’s academic performance? If the answer is yes, how much influence has this association had on the students’ performance?
3. Is there a link between the activities of the parents’ teachers’ association in schools and Nigeria’s overall educational development?
4. Does this organization have an impact on basic policy development in Nigerian schools?
5. Are the inputs of the parents’ teachers’ association required to improve the education sector’s decline?
1.5 THEORIES OF RESEARCH
1st Hypothesis
H0: The Parents’ Teachers Association has no effect on teachers’ overall performance in schools.
H1: The Parent-Teacher Association has an impact on the overall performance of teachers in schools.
2nd Hypothesis
H0: The Parents’ Teachers Association has no influence on their children’s overall school performance.
H1: The Parents’ Teachers Association has no influence on their children’s overall school performance.
3rd Hypothesis
H0: There is no link between the activities of the parents’ teachers’ association and the overall educational development in Nigeria.
H1: There is a link between the activities of the parents’ teachers’ association and the overall development of education in Nigeria.
1.6 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE
Certain inputs from sources must be thoroughly considered and implemented for students to perform optimally in school and for teachers to give their best in schools. The parents’ teachers association is a very viable source; for a better education sector, one must understand the extent of this association’s role in schools and, by extension, the education sector.
Teachers should be encouraged and guided, students’ progress should be monitored, and above all, school administration should be well guided and advised on the right moves to make in order to resuscitate the declining education sector. As a result, one of the most important implications of this research is determining the level of parental and teacher involvement in school administration.
1.7 THE STUDY’S SCOPE AND AIM
This study is limited to parents, primary and secondary schools in Awa-Ibom State’s Uyo local government. In recognizing the role of the parents’ teachers’ association in schools throughout the local government. The research will concentrate on parents and teachers from various primary schools in LAGOS state.
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS
PTA stands for Parents’ Teachers Association.
