ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the causes of students’ poor performance in science in the SSCE in Edo State’s Orhionmwon Local Government Area. The first chapter discusses the study’s introduction and context, objectives, purpose of the study, limitations, and definition of words.

The second chapter investigated numerous pieces of literature and periodicals authored by diverse writers that are related to the topic. The third chapter discusses the study’s approach. The primary data collection instruments were questionnaires, which were separated into science instructor questionnaires and student questionnaires. The fourth chapter analysed and interpreted the data collected from the respondents. (questionnaire).

The fifth chapter summarised the findings, concluded on them, and the researcher gave recommendations to help pupils do better in science topics on the secondary school certificate examination. The researcher also highlighted parts of the study that could be looked into further.

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S HISTORY

Science is one of the most significant subjects taught in primary, secondary, and even postsecondary schools. It may be traced back to early men who used two stones to start fires; he employed scientific technique to determine development, which leads to the discovery of new concepts.

Science is a systematic collection of knowledge that describes and categorises all forms of life and substance. This is due to the fact that it aids in the discovery of new ideas and the production of countless items that have decreased human efforts towards the accomplishment of a better existence.

The utility of science disciplines has expanded to include many additional concepts. Scientists have the ability to observe, classify, measure, experiment, control variables, evaluate findings, and communicate. They have also used the empirical research approach.

Science courses are the vehicles for technological advancement and scientific breakthroughs. There are other areas where good knowledge of science is required, such as manufactured nuclear power, medicine, demography, and so on. To be more specific, a country whose citizens are scientifically uneducated cannot be expected to make any reasonable technologically based political decision on such issues as nuclear energy and atmospheric pollution due to the rudimentary tools to grasp the various arguments.

Therefore, scientific and technological progress represent the means by which countries around the world are labelled as developed or underdeveloped. Cities in industrialised countries are extremely mechanised thanks to technology; they have faster communication, easier transit, and so on.

Despite the importance of science disciplines, students encounter a variety of challenges, which are reflected in their performance in our institutions, particularly at the secondary school level. Students in our secondary schools are afraid of science because they believe it is too abstract in comparison to other objects.

With this fear in mind, students perform poorly in external examinations, particularly in secondary schools in Orhionmwon Local Government Area. A closer look at this issue will prompt one to investigate the causes. Most secondary schools today do not have enough qualified teachers to teach these topics.

Few people are dedicated to their jobs. Some teachers regard teaching as a secondary job; they dedicate much of their time to hawking clothes or working on the farm, leaving little or no time for lesson preparation or attending to academic concerns of their pupils.

The few remaining science professors teach the topics without the use of teaching aids, and the high expense of textbooks has exacerbated the situation. The purpose of this investigation is to find out what is causing the low performance and unfavourable attitude towards the subject.

THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES

The investigation will look into;

1. The number of scientific instructors who have received training in our secondary schools.

2. The amount of highly qualified scientific teachers in our secondary schools.

3. Adequate equipment and facilities for effective science instruction in our high schools.

4. The many ways used to teach science in our high schools.

5. Students’ and teachers’ attitudes towards science as a subject influence their success in high school diploma exams.

THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The cause for the low performance had already been mentioned. However, I believe that the level of low performance of science pupils in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Oredo Local Government Area is concerning. This is the goal of this research.

a. To bring professional science instructors’ attention to the dreadful conditions of the subject in the area.

b. To emphasise the primary variables influencing students’ poor performance in WASSCE topics based on the research findings.

c. To make recommendations on modern concepts for teaching science subjects in the area.

d. Encouraging parents to contribute to the subject’s advancement by corporation and funding relevant field trips and laboratories, which are important components of science. This will go a long way towards encouraging pupils to get interested in the subject.

SUMMARY OF PROBLEMS

This study will provide answers to the following questions:

1. To what extent do students taught by experienced and trained teachers outperform those taught by inexperienced and unskilled teachers?

2. Do students who attend schools with appropriate science teaching equipment and facilities outperform those who attend schools with inadequate science teaching equipment?

3. To what extent do students who are taught using a modern inquiry-based method acquire more interest than students who are taught using an old method of teaching science?

4. Do students’ and instructors’ attitudes towards science as a subject influence their success in high school diploma exams?

QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

This study is concerned with the investigation of students’ poor performance in science in the secondary school certificate examination. The importance of this study also reflects in the value of teachers’ education, particularly in science teachers should be dynamic, innovative, and effective in their teaching so that students are inspired to learn the subject.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This research project has been designed to investigate;

1. Science students and teachers at the selected secondary school’s senior secondary school III class

2. The facilities and equipment used to teach science at the various schools.

3. Science school certificate results from three consecutive sessions in the selected secondary schools were used.

TERMS DEFINITION

Good and relevant textbooks: A book written by Nigerian secondary schools that is related to the school certificate curriculum.

Excellent performance: a distinction or credit in the WASSCE examination

Poor performance: WASSCE examination failure.

Classroom Environment: All favourable settings that can be created in the classroom to promote teaching and learning scenarios, such as effective teaching approaches.

Motivating Students to Learn Science: Effective teaching methods/techniques, practical work, science facilities in schools, and positive student/teacher relationships

Teacher Resources: The term “teacher resources” refers to instructional materials or aids that are utilised to supplement the lessons to be taught and pique the learners’ interest in order to improve their learning activities.
