THE ROLE OF WOMEN’S EDUCATION IN NATION BUILDING

THE ROLE OF WOMEN’S EDUCATION IN NATION-BUILDING

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

There is no doubt that women play an important role in the development of human society (IES). Recently, the need and importance of women’s education has grown, and most countries, particularly developing countries, have stated that they will create a pathway for women to be educated. The world has also begun to recognize the importance of women’s education as it has evolved. The first world conference was held on March 8th to examine the changes for women in their bid to take their place alongside men in nation building.

Education is so highly valued in Nigeria that it is regarded as a prerequisite for all societal shortcomings as well as the most reliable means of nation building. “Education itself is the development of an individual through training, transmission of what is worthwhile to the point where he is able to fit into his environment and contribute to the best of his ability, to the well-being of society,” writes Omegbe (1998).

The national policy on education stated unequivocally that the Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted education as an excellent instrument for effective nation building; as a result of this belief, education has been pursued zealously in the majority of Nigeria. It should be noted that women make up roughly half of the world’s population, work one-third of the hours, earn one-tenth of the world’s income, and have less than one-hundredth of the world’s properly registered in his name.

According to the World Bank Report (1996), women make up a higher percentage of the rural populace; out of approximately 70% of Nigeria’s rural populace, women account for 50%; as a result, they bear the brunt of the difficulties of rural life. Similarly, Okukpon (1994) states that “women constitute more than half of the adult population.”

They provide 80 percent of the food requirement and play an important role in food handling and home maintenance. The high rate of female non-participation is concerning, and there is a need to raise awareness about the dangers of not participating or playing an active role in nation building. Most Nigerian states, including Edo State, have expressed strong interest in women’s education projects aimed at increasing women’s productivity and contributing to nation building.

Fortunately, women have not given up their fight against discrimination. They have asked for additional concessions and strategies aimed at emancipation in order to contribute their fair share to the nation. Education is widely regarded as the most efficient and effective means of transforming women.

The most important role women have to play in contributing to the nation’s building is a topic that is currently popular, and many emerge and activities are directed toward women in the country through Federal States and Local Government Programs. According to Edukugbo (2002), cited in Imogie (2002), a country’s wealth is determined not by the abundance of its revenue or the strength of its fortifications, but by the number of its educated citizens, men and women of enlightenment and character.

Despite the effects of the state agenda, the Federal Government and Non-Governmental Organizations are moving toward women education programs. To what extent have the goals and objectives been met in order to enable women to participate in nation building?

EXPLANATION OF THE PROBLEMS

Since the United Nations General Assembly Resolution of December 18, 1973, which established the International Women’s Year, there has been a tremendous increase in awareness of the importance of women’s education.

However, women’s involvement and contribution to nation building has yet to reach its peak and the level that it should; there is still some illiteracy among women, which makes awareness of their need to participate in nation building unpopular.

As a result, the focus of this research is on the role of women’s education in nation building: Egor Local Government Area case study The study will look into; in order to provide a detailed analysis.

1. Education programs for women in Edo State.

2. Political, economic, social, cultural, religious, and physiological issues confronting women’s education in Edo State despite government and non-government efforts.

3. A program launched by the government and non-governmental organizations to effect social change among women.

4. The impact of such a program on participants and concept formation.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The study’s goal is to gain access to women’s education and identify their role in nation building, particularly in Edo State. Many governments around the world, including Nigeria, have recognized the role of women in nation building if they are empowered and given the opportunity to contribute their fair share. Based on the problems stated above, the specific objectives of the study are as follows:

1. How does a woman in Edo State encourage her children to get an education?

2. In what ways do Nigerian women contribute to nation building?

3. To what extent did the seminar/workshop contribute to the society’s worth potential?

4. Can a woman function effectively in the modern economic system?

QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

For the study, the following research questions were developed.

1. How does a woman in Edo State encourage her children to get an education?

2. To what extent do Nigerian women contribute to national development?

3. To what extent did the seminar/workshop contribute to women’s societal potential?

4. Can a woman function effectively in the modern economic system?

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

It is an unavoidable fact that education is a tool for achieving and influencing nation building. Because education aids and develops an individual, it enables one to function effectively in any environment.

Women’s education improves their lives by increasing their income, making them self-sufficient, and putting them in a position to contribute their fair share to the nation-building of their communities and the nation at large.

This study will serve as a resource for any individual or adult educator who wishes to learn more about the role of women education programs in Edo State.

This study will also serve as a resource for those involved in women’s education programs and their participants, allowing them to recognize the positive impact as well. This will not only help the program progress, but will also ensure its institutionalization.

DELIMITATION/SCOPE

The coverage of this project work will have an impact on Edo State and the changes that have been achieved in the state through women’s education thus far. Some of the variables to consider in terms of development. That has occurred will be looking at the women’s political status, management positions, literacy level, and if it is affecting customs, religious beliefs, if it is doing the local government more harm than good, and most importantly, the state’s socio-economic efficiency, so far through women education.
