Chapter One: Introduction 1.1 Background of the Study
Time management is crucial to labour productivity in all sectors of the economy. Labour productivity is regarded as the most important factor in assuring output growth and economic progress. In most nations, labour contributes more than 65% of GDP, making it a crucial input of production. (Beggs, Fisher, & Dornbush 2000; Lipsey & Chrystal 2005).

Based on this viewpoint, it is critical that efficiency be considered into labour utilisation, which is the place of time management. Most researchers believe that labour can only be what it is educated to be (Sorkin 1992).

As a result, it has been proposed that throughout the early stages of employment, students be taught the importance of time management while also instilling time management skills. In most countries, the brewing stage is known as university.

It is consequently important to analyse the practice of time management among Nigerian undergraduate students. This is done utilising undergraduate students as a case study.

Statement of the Research Problem / Research Question

Nigerian students face numerous challenges. These issues are frequently the cause of poor academic achievement. Nigerian students frequently face a variety of challenges, ranging from financial inadequacies to time constraints.

While this study investigates the effects of time management on student performance, it faces the challenges of employing reliable factors in its conclusions.

How does the average university student spend his or her time while attending school?

What are the genuine aspects influencing his or her study time utilisation?

Does study time consumption correlate directly with gender, age, marital status, income, and degree of education?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

This study has the following objectives.

To learn how the average university student spends his or her time while school is in session.

To learn about the challenges students face with time management.

To determine whether there is a relationship between age, gender, degree of education, marital status, and parental background and time management.

1.4 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is spatial in nature because it takes place within the University of Benin. It was undertaken during a six-month period.

1.5 The Significance Of The Study

This study will be extremely beneficial to curriculum developers in the education industry, as well as students. Essentially, students will learn more about how their time management affects their academic achievement.

Statement of Hypothesis
The following hypotheses will be tested during this study. The hypotheses are expressed in null and alternative forms.
Ho: There is no substantial association between the number of hours students spend on academic activities and their time spent on nonacademic pursuits.

Ha: There is a considerable association between the amount of time students spend on academic activities and non-academic pursuits.

Ho: There is no significant link between time management and student sex.

Ho: There is a considerable link between time management and student sex.

Ho: There is no substantial correlation between time management and student age.

Ho: There is a strong association between time management and student age.

Ho: There is no substantial link between time management and student marital status.

Ho: There is a considerable link between time management and student marital status.

Ho: There is no significant link between time management and students’ parental backgrounds.

Ho: There is a considerable link between time management and pupils’ parental backgrounds.

1.7 Limitations of the Study
The study’s limitations can be considered in terms of environmental limits. Basically, the study is limited to the University of Benin. There are also budgetary limits due to the limited money available for research preparation.
