ABSTRACT

The goal of this project is to investigate the frequency with which patients visit the hospital over the course of the study. The study demonstrates the use of statistics in medicine, and hence doctors and health administrators have always sought help from the Department of Statistics on the analysis and interpretation of medical data. The work is delivered in five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, and the second chapter is a study of relevant literature in which the perspectives of various writers on the topic in question are examined. Chapter three is the research methodology, which examines the various research methods and procedures used in data collection. It also highlights the techniques for data collection, where the historical and survey research methods were used. All data collected are presented and analysed in Chapter four. Finally, Chapter 5 summarises the entire research work, draws conclusions from the study, and makes recommendations on how to enhance health care delivery to the people.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Since its beginnings, Federal Medical Centre Katsina has seen a significant number of people seeking treatment, medical advice, family planning, and a variety of other reasons.

The hospital’s efficiency has attracted a wide range of patients. It is thus in the best interests of the researcher to apply his or her statistical knowledge to the attendance of ill health (patients) at the hospital.

It does not, and the research will focus on classifying, organising, and recording patient attendance in the hospital on a monthly, quarterly, yearly, and biannual basis.

In an endeavour to create effective methods and routines for comparing the overall attendance of in and out patients, which in general includes male, female, and kid patients that visit the hospital.

To top it off, it will be in the form of data (secondary or primary data) based on the group of individuals who want to utilise it and the objective or criterion for doing the research. The data acquired will be analysed, organised, summarised, and assembled.

Because hospital patronage is a regular and continuous process, efficient data collection will be possible, as will statistical applications and large amounts of data, such as moving averages and time series analysis.

1.2 Objectives of the Study

1. Determine whether patient attendance is increasing or decreasing.

2. Forecast patient attendance using the linear trend technique.

3. Forecast patient attendance from 2008 to 2012 using the fitted trend equation.

1.3 SCOPE AND LIMITATION.

This study’s analysis will be limited to patient attendance comparison. (IN and OUT) are based on secondary data acquired from the Federal Medical Centre Katsina, Katsina State, from 1998 to 2007.

1.4 The Historical Background of the Source of Data

Federal Medical Centre, Katsina is a medical facility operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria in Katsina, Katsina State, Nigeria.

The current chief medical director is Abdullahi Shugaba. The Federal Medical Centre in Katsina was established in the mid-1970s. The hospital was previously known as General Hospital Katsina.

Various Departments of the Hospital

The hospital has nine departments. The several departments include:

Medical Department: The Medical Director is the hospital’s ultimate leader. He only reports to the Kaduna State Commissioner of Health. He is in charge of every medical situation.

The Hospital Secretary heads the Administration Department. He is in charge of all of the administrative staff in the hospital’s numerous departments, and all department heads report to him and are accountable to him, as each head acts on his behalf.

Nursing Service Department: The nursing service department is in responsibility of centralising nurses, assigning them to duty rosters, and relocating their training to other post-basic courses.

Medical Record Department: This department is responsible for keeping records and collecting data.

Laboratory: A technologist works in the laboratory and oversees the operation of laboratory equipment.

The pharmacy department is in charge of drug supply, custody, protection, and storage, among other things.

The radiology department is in charge of X-rays, such as chinstraps.

Ophthalmology Department: The ophthalmology department is in responsibility of all eye cases, including treatment.

The E.N.T Department handles all ear cases.
