TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT AS A TOOL FOR ENHANCING ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Quality improvement is the only hope for work salvation; so, understanding of the need for change through systematic and planned development is a strength that organisations must strive for.

Organisations must work hard and be willing to plan and anticipate growth in order to stay ahead of the competition, maintain a high quality in the commercial sector, and preserve the trust that may best encourage employees on a personal level.

Total quality management, as a strategy for improving organisational development, can help to improve organisational efficiency.

According to Lysons (1996), total quality management is a management philosophy and organisational practices that attempt to maximise the organization’s human and material resources in order to fulfil its goals.

Total quality management may also be defined as a method of managing an organisation in such a way that every job and procedure is completed correctly the first time, every time.

According to the definitions provided above, total quality management focuses on the need for every member of the organisation to generate quality awareness in all aspects; it involves the efficient and effective use of both human and material resources in order to understand the needs of all internal and external customers or consumers.

To fulfil its quality objectives, every business must have whole quality management in place. Furthermore, organisations should not tolerate any type of quality flaw at any moment.

Total quality management pervades every process and work carried out in the organisation, i.e. they give precise instructions or specifications to both internal and external suppliers, as well as assess competence “are capable of doing this job correctly and effectively”.

The organisation must emphasise dedication, communication, and cultural change in order to achieve continual improvement in product or service through the use of a teamwork structure and tools.

Total quality management is about meeting the demands and expectations of current and prospective customers, as well as continuously reducing costs and improving quality, both of which are required for an organisation to remain in business, i.e. for organisational development.

In essence, the goal of total quality management is to ensure that every aspect of the manufacturing process is free of errors in quality. The raw material, the manufacturing process, and the product must be free of quality issues.

1.2 Statement of Problem

In order to build a relevant application of coordinated total quality management to human resource management and development plan, we must first identify the suppliers’ customer interfaces in that function.

This study may thus be interpreted as an attempt to investigate the application of total quality management to human resource management with the goal of highlighting the impact of these methods on overall organisational efficiency as a tool for boosting organisational development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1) Examine how the concept of overall quality management can be used to human resource management development, policy, and strategies.

2) Investigate the influence of overall quality management on human resource development and organisation effectiveness as a technique for improving organisational development.

3) Determine the relevance of developing a system that provides managers with information regarding quality processes, allowing them to plan, control, and evaluate performance.

4) Determine an emphasis on customer-driven product enhancement.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS.

i) How does the entire quality management concept apply to human resource management development, policy, and strategies?

ii) How does overall quality management affect human resource development in organisations?

iii) Can comprehensive quality management be utilised to improve organisational development?

iv) Can overall quality management focus on customer-driven product improvements?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This will look at how an organisation’s management uses comprehensive quality management as a tool to improve organisational development.

It will also assist organisations in meeting the demands and expectations of current and prospective customers.
