ABSTRACT
This study examines the importance of tourism in the socio-cultural development of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. The contributions of tourism in the preservation of historical heritage of the people and revealing the factors hindering the development of tourism in the study area is the gap this work intends to fill. Using historical and descriptive methods and relying on primary and secondary sources, we were able to discover that poor funding amongst other factors are militating against tourism development in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. And it recommends among other things that proper funding and attention from the federal government will boost the development of tourism for the promotion of the socio-cultural spheres of the people.
