Undergraduate Students’ Concerns And Gender Preferences For Counsellors

ABSTRACT

This study explored attitudes toward counseling and counselor preference among 315 Black college students, focusing on how socioeconomic status, cultural mistrust, and African Self-consciousness influence these attitudes.

Multiple regression analyses revealed that gender, cultural mistrust, and socioeconomic status were significant predictors of attitudes toward counseling. Specifically, lower socioeconomic status, reduced cultural mistrust, and being female were associated with more positive attitudes toward seeking counseling.

Canonical correlation analyses examined the relationship between participant attributes and counselor preference, across personal, vocational, and environmental concerns.

For personal concerns such as feelings of inadequacy and depression, results indicated that higher African Self-consciousness and cultural mistrust were linked to a preference for Black counselors. Conversely, Black students with lower African Self-consciousness, especially males, preferred male counselors.

For environmental concerns, including perceived racism and isolation, higher African Self-consciousness and being female were associated with a preference for Black female counselors.

The findings have implications for counseling research and practice, emphasizing the need to consider these variables when addressing the counseling needs of Black college students.
