ABSTRACT
The concepts of urbanization are a continual process whose effects are shared by educational institutions worldwide. The same holds true for Edaiken Primary School in Benn City’s heart. In recent years, the rate of urbanization has accelerated over the globe, especially in Benin City.
Consequently, Edaiken Primary School’s enrollment has continued to climb. Currently, there are a population of ten thousand students. This dynamic has resulted in an overburdened state of current infrastructure.
Urbanization has resulted in inadequate educational facilities. This project evaluated the aforementioned variables in an effort to demonstrate the effect of urbanization on the teaching and learning process at Edaiken Primary School.
The methodology utilized primary and secondary school sources, questionnaire data from a library, and personal observation and inspection. The findings indicated infrastructure amenities such as housing, restrooms, conveniences, playgrounds, equipment storage areas, libraries, and classrooms.
FIRST PART
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The latest edition of the encyclopedia defines urbanization as the process by which a population gets concentrated in cities or urban areas. Sometimes, the terms may relate to the effects of living in metropolitan areas. In contrast, infrastructural development may refer to the development of the basic framework required for the successful operation of a system. In the context of education, infrastructural development refers to the infrastructural materials or framework necessary for effective and worthwhile learning.
Rapid urban growth has taken place in Nigeria in recent decades. The country has also witnessed the highest rates of urban population expansion. As a result, there is an increased demand for social amenities, such as education, the foundation of a nation’s economic, social, political, and technical development. In the previous ten years, primary and secondary education in the country have grown rapidly. The introduction of free primary education in some areas of the country and the launch of universal free primary education in 1979 led to an increase in the number of state governments grappling with the provision of the necessary infrastructure, including school buildings, teaching staff, teaching aids, seats, playground equipment, and scientific equipment, among others. Introducing a new national education policy has undoubtedly alleviated the challenge of providing the essential infrastructure.
EXPRESSION OF THE PROBLEM
In our elementary and secondary schools, there is a rising worry about the shortage of vital equipment and facilities and other basic infrastructure, such as well-equipped libraries, laboratories, and good classrooms with seats, toilet facilities, and playgrounds, etc. Many individuals believe that the phenomena and its attendant issues are the result of other reasons, such as the rapid rise of the primary school population. The challenges with infrastructural development at Edaiken primary school are also attributed to the fact that the school population has exploded since the announcement of universal free primary education in the state and universal basic education.
Inadequate planning as a result of inaccurate statistics.
Insufficient financial support from the education authority.
The parents/teachers association provides minimal or no support for the school.
Poor maintenance culture.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Identify some of the missing fundamental infrastructure at Edaiken primary school in Benin City.
To identify some of the obstacles impeding the school’s infrastructure development.
Examine the effects of the school’s lack of infrastructure on both students and teachers.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
With the advent of the 6-3-3-4 system of education, there is a widespread perception that the quality of education in the state, from the elementary to the secondary to the university levels, is deteriorating. Numerous individuals have attributed the problem of the declining standard, in part, to the inadequate provision of infrastructure in the school, which they view as fundamental to the implementation and success of the system. In addition, they argue that our educational system requires more occupational practices and apprentices and less theory. A nation can accomplish very little technologically without the aid of science and technology. Practical education is the source of expertise and knowledge. Practical education is highly dependent on the provision of the appropriate infrastructure and well-trained personnel.
I concur and believe that the development of suitable and necessary infrastructure in our elementary schools is essential if our educational system is not to remain theoretically and practically oriented. The need to enhance the current elementary school enrollment. The challenges with infrastructural development at Edaiken primary school are also attributed to the fact that the school population has increased dramatically since the introduction of universal free primary education and universal basic education.
